“I checked the contents and then placed it on Fran’s desk to go up to Rue this morning.”

“So there was no snake in it?”

He gives me a wry glare. “Obviously not.” His gaze then turns curious. “You think it came from Arachon?”

“I have no idea. That's what I’m trying to find out. What do you know about the security blackspot.”

He purses his lips and then rolls his eyes like an insolent teenager caught getting up to shit but not willing to crack.

Yet.

I don’t give a fuck who he is, if Rue was nearly hurt because of anything he’s done, I will string him up as I would anyone else.

“We receive certain visitors who prefer not to be on camera.”

“And?”

“The box arrived last night by one such visitor.”

“Why?”

“If you think my mother is going to send a priceless tiara through the mail, you have a block of wood between your ears.”

“You snuck it in? Why just not declare it?”

“Theft is rife. I can name half a dozen idiots who would attempt to steal it before it had even crossed the border.”

“Great. Describe the courier.”

“Tall, dark cloak. It was all a bit dramatic.” He lets out a sigh and reaches for a cigar before leaning back in his chair.

“Fuck’s sake,” I mutter. “A camera goes up there today.”

“No.”

“Vik,” I warn him. “There is a massive blind spot, and someone who shouldn’t, knows about it.”

“No camera.”

“Dammit. You're a fucking obtuse piece of shit.”

He snorts in amusement. “I do like you, Isaac. I can’t remember the last time someone called me anything insulting.”

“No one dares, and I don’t give a shit. I was called here to protectyourdaughter. I can’t do that with limitations.”

“The night before last, you heard something out there.” He changes the subject swiftly to catch me off-guard, but I’m not that slow.

“You think this was something to do with it? How? The box only arrivedlastnight.”

“Recon, Isaac. As you said, there are people who know about the blind spot who shouldn’t.”

“Do you trust Luca?”

He narrows his eyes. “You don’t?”

“I don’t trust anyone.”

“Good strategy. He wouldn’t be here if I didn’t.” His tone is careful, almost as if he is afraid of what I might say next.
