“Can I go and fix it now?”

He grins. “Of course.”

Giggling, I get up and stumble towards the bedroom. The shower and food have made me sleepy again, and the satisfaction from their knots is wearing off quickly. I need to be fast.

But when I look at the nest, there is only a tiny bit of adjusting. Jack knows me so well, he knows what I need and how I need it.

Racing into the living room, I fling my arms around him, choking back the sob that is making me ugly cry with snot and everything. “Thank you,” I manage to get out. “You’re perfect.”

Jack holds me tightly, his muscular arms enveloping me in warmth. “Anything for you, Lily,” he murmurs into my hair, his voice deep with emotion.

I pull back slightly and look up at Jack, my eyes glistening with tears of gratitude. “You’ve always known exactly what I need,” I say quietly.

He smiles gently, brushing a stray tear from my cheek. “It’s easy when you’re the centre of my world.” His words are simple, but they hit me hard. I’ve never felt more cherished.

Sam clears his throat, breaking the intimate bubble around us. “Come on then, let’s get you settled in your nest so you can rest.”

Jack carries me back to the bedroom. The nest is heavenly as I slip into it, feeling everything melt away as I sink into the softness.

Jack leans down and kisses my forehead before joining Max and Sam by the door. “We’ll leave you for now. Call us when you need us,” he says softly.

I nod, already feeling sleep creeping in, and then I’m out.

Chapter 35

Sam

The last of the rut passes, and I stare at Lily while she sleeps. Her face is less flushed, and her breathing has evened out. Max has left for work already, and Jack is busy downstairs in the garden. I should be moving my arse to the station, having rung in with emergency rut leave the last few days, but I can’t bring myself to leave her.

She opens her eyes and yawns, staring up at the ceiling before she realises I’m next to her.

“Hi,” she says, looking around. “Where is everyone else?”

“Jack’s downstairs, and Max went to work.”

She frowns. “What day is it?”

“Wednesday.”

Lily sits up in surprise. “What? Already?”

I nod and chuckle. “Yes, already.”

“Fuck, that was some heat. I don’t remember most of it.”

“And that right there is why we didn’t mate with you,” I say bluntly.

Lily blushes, her cheeks turning a delicate shade of pink. “Right, of course. Thanks for looking out for me,” she mumbles, brushing a hand through her tangled hair.

“You know we’d never take advantage of you. We’re not complete wankers.”

Lily smirks at my choice of words. “Very gentlemanly of you,” she teases, rolling her eyes.

“Don’t get cheeky now.” I reach over to ruffle her hair playfully. “You need anything? Tea? Breakfast?”

“Yeah, breakfast sounds amazing.”

“Alright, stay put. I’ll whip something up.”
