As we walk out into the sun, Savannah smiles at me. A beautiful, slightly wicked smile. She is as light as I’ve ever seen her, further proved when she takes my hand and laces our fingers together. I don’t know what it is about her that has captured me. She is a gorgeous creature, no doubt, but there’s more. I just wish she would let me get to know her better. I need to see if what I’m feeling for her is real or just dick-driven lust.

“You seem relaxed,” I say tentatively. I’m so conscious of everything I say and do around her because more often than not, I end up making a complete fool of myself.

“I am,” she says. “I have never expelled that much magick before at one time. It was exhilarating!”

I return her grin and point to the sky. “That was you?” Wow, I’m in awe. I’d figured it was her mother. That was some fucking storm she created.

She nods with a note of pride, but then a slight frown creases her brow. “I guess rage is my trigger.”

I squeeze her hand. “It was incredible,” I tell her.

I’m relieved when she smiles again.

“I have something to ask you,” I say after a beat. I seriously hope that she doesn’t think I’m completely deluded.

“Okay,” she says, looking a bit wary.

I take a deep breath and stop walking, turning to face her. I keep hold of her hand lightly. She lets me, so I find courage in that.

“I want to come back to the Dark Fae Kingdom with you,” I blurt out, feeling my cheeks heat up.

“What?” she splutters, looking completely shocked.

“I know it sounds weird to you, but you have expressed that is your home and that you intend to live there. If I come with you, then we can spend some time together. Get to know each other properly. I know that you…uhm…are attracted to me.” I look away in case she laughs at me, but I know I haven’t imagined the little looks that she’s given me on occasion. “I want to see if we have something, you know?” I clear my throat and risk looking back into her bewitching violet eyes.

“So, you want to move to the D.F.K.?” she asks with a frown.

“I understand your hesitation. Vampires and the Fae…no love lost there…” I start but stop when she starts to fiddle with the ring on my right thumb. It’s made of enchanted Faerie silver and allows me to walk in the sun and not burst into flames. Unfortunately, the “Faerie” part of the spell is the blood of the Dark Fae. Many were held in captivity and bled out for centuries until Aefre rescued them and strictly forbade the use of Dark Fae blood for the spell, thus cutting off any new Vampires the ability to walk in the sun. I was lucky. I got mine the day before the ruling was put into place about twenty-five years ago, three days after I was turned.

She gives me a searching look.

“I know what I am is distasteful to you,” I say, wishing that it wasn’t so, but ignoring it will do us no good here. “But I can’t help it. I’m hoping that you can put it aside and decide for yourself if you like me based onme.”

“Idofind you sweet and cute,” she says. “And yes, you being a Vampire is something that I can’t quite see past yet. But you’re right. How will I do that if I don’t get to knowyou?”

I give her a shaky smile. My heart is thumping so hard, I think it might explode.

“But coming to the D.F.K. seems a bit extreme. I can’t be with you all the time and I can’t answer for anyone else’s actions.”

My heart sinks. “I can take care of myself.”

Her face goes cold.

Shit!

Backtrack.Now!

The sun disappears abruptly, a big black cloud covering it as she gets more and more pissed off with me

“I—I mean, I’m not scared to go there…”

Fuck. I’m losing her.

But somewhere, the Vampire gods must be shining down on me, because she laughs. Notatme, fortunately.

“I didn’t mean to imply that you were,” she says lightly. “I’m just looking out for you. Vampires in the Fae Kingdoms are treated with extreme caution. It might get uncomfortable for you.”
