He gives me a relieved smile and then ducks his head quickly to kiss the top of my head. “Glad you’re back,” he says and then he is gone.
I smile all the way up the stairs and down the corridor to my room. I push open the door and sigh happily. I feel at home here.
I throw my bag on the bed and then flop down next to it, stretching out for a minute before deciding to get in the shower and ready myself for this feast.
If Ambrosia had anything to do with it, it will also be full of Light Fae and I can’t wait to see Blayne again.

Savannah
Sometime much later, I make my way back downstairs. The feast is in full swing, as I knew it would be, hence why I’m late. I can sneak in without being noticed and hopefully sneak back out again early. I must show my face though or Ambrosia will use it as a tactic to discredit me.
Bitch.
I follow the noise to the Dining Hall, situated on the right of the downstairs hallway. It is a huge room and it’s packed. I slip inside and immediately my eyes go to the cluster of Light Fae on the far end of the room, easily recognizable due to their blonde hair amidst all of the dark-haired Dark Fae. I see Blayne’s mother, but I can’t see him. The disappointment hits me hard, but I scan my eyes across the sea of people anyway, just in case he is here somewhere.
As I turn around, I come eye-to-purple-eye with Ambrosia.
She is dressed in a bright yellow gown, her dark hair coiled up on top of her head and a cruel smirk on her face as she takes in my usual black dress with the lace sleeves.
“Savannah,” she drawls. “I didn’t know you were back.”
“Yes, a few hours ago,” I inform her coldly.
“Hm,” she mutters, but then her eyes flash. “Daddy won’t choose you to rule,” she hisses at me. “I’mhis daughter. I’mtheDark Fae Princess.”
“No, you areaDark Fae Princess. My mother istheDark Fae Princess. She doesn’t want the throne, so by rights, it’s mine.”
“Over my dead body,” she snarls at me, not happy to be reminded that she isn’t exactly who she thinks she is.
“That can be arranged,” I bite back, the sparks flying from my fingertips to singe her over-the-top gown.
“Aah!” she gasps and pats at the smelting fabric. “You bitch!”
I grit my teeth. She reduces me to this, every single time. I can’t help it. She is the biggest button pusher that I’ve ever come across.
“Stay out of my way,” I say to her and turn on my heel to leave her behind me. I can’t deal with her drama right now. She is a stuck-up little madam, that needs bringing down a peg or two. She loathes my mother because she knows that being the first born, by a thousand years I might add, she is the Princess that my grandfather was waiting for. He has many, many sons, but then he discovered my mother had been born in secret to the Dragon Empress after an illicit affair. The Dragons and Fae hate each other, an eons old feud that the Dragons started. My mother was kept from the Fae until about twenty-five years ago. Drake was over the moon to finally have his daughter. She was meant to bring forth the uniting of the warring Dark and Light Fae, so that they could live in harmony, but it all went horribly wrong. I’m sketchy with the details after that. All I know is that Ambrosia turned up and assumed the place oftheDark Fae Princess. But everyone knows that she isn’t.
I sigh and shoot Gramps an apologetic look. He shakes his head at me but isn’t angry with me for bickering with his daughter. He knows all too well what she’s like.
I decide now is probably a good time to sneak out and see Jerrick. I can at least relax when I’m around him. I exit the Dining Hall and then I stop dead in my tracks.
I grit my teeth and breathe in deeply. Fighting this will only make it worse.
“Savannah, why don’t you wait a minute,” a sickly-sweet voice drawls from behind me.
I’m spun around by the force of the magick to look up at Anders, the Light Fae King.
“Your Highness,” I murmur to him as he approaches me as a predator would his prey. This is why I always have to be on alert. I mentioned before that I’m an amateur when it comes to these ancient Fae. They have magick that I can’t even begin to hope for. Hence why I’m now unable to move.
He gives me a tight smile, reaching me and gripping my chin so that he can force me to look him in the eye. I blink rapidly because I know exactly what’s coming next.
“Tell me, is your mother here?” he asks me in a lilting voice, dropping his compulsion over me like a sick blanket.
I hate this power that the Light Fae Royals have. The Dark Fae don’t have it. We can control the wild weather and have empathic abilities. I’m easy prey because they can catch me out with this. They’re hard pressed to find another Dark Fae that they can implant their suggestions to. Yet another reason why Ineedto be here, learning, gaining more experience.
Until then, I have no choice but to answer him. “No,” I grate, glaring into his green eyes and then forcing my eyes up past his blond head to stare at the ceiling. He knows he can’t keep this up with me. I’m not that weak. He can catch me the first time, but I can throw it off quite quickly. Luckily, it’s not like he can force me into an uncompromising position. It’s all in the wording. All he can get from me is answers.
