“Is it working?” I ask with a nervous laugh.
She sighs. “I know how much you want this. I know that you are all Fae and you love being here. I will never stop worrying about you, though. I distrust the Fae more than any other creature in the Realms. Especially the Light Fae and you will have to get involved with them, Savvie, if you become Queen. I’m not sure I can accept that.”
“Trey will be the one,” I mutter quietly. “I already know that, in my heart.”
She grits her teeth. “That does nothing to change my mind. He is trouble, Savvie, please, listen to me.”
“He isn’t. Not to me. I can’t explain, but if you see how he is with me, felt what I feel from him…you’ll know what I mean.”
“And what about Theo?” she asks, shoving the embarrassed Vampire forward. “You brought him here to do what exactly?”
“To get to know him. I never said that Trey would be the only one?”
She splutters at me, but then rolls her eyes. “You girls are like little peas in a pod, aren’t you? You know that I can’t sayanythingabout that, but I am shocked, Savvie. I never expected this from you.”
“I didn’t either, but what can I say? Like mother, like daughter.”
She turns her shrewd green eyes on Theo. “You are standing there like you know all of this already. You’ve discussed it?”
“We have,” Theo replies on my behalf. “I accept whatever Savvie decides.”
She sneers at him. “Just too good to be true, aren’t you?”
He shrugs. “I know you’ll think I’m crazy, but I love your daughter.”
I gape at him. Love?
He turns to me. “I know that we don’t know each other, but I feel it, Savvie. Here.” He thumps his chest. “I’m willing to wait until you feel it too.”
“Wait for what?” Mother asks, interrupting us rudely.
“Whatever she decides,” Theo says, his eyes never leaving mine.
“Wait here,” Mother says and drags me away a little bit. “I know about you and Jerrick as well,” she hisses in my ear. “If your father ever finds out, he will commit murder.”
“That’s unfortunate,” I drawl, “because if he comes back to me later and says that he is willing to accept that I care about other men as well, then I’m telling everyone how we feel about each other. We are actually in love.”
“I know, I can see it on both of your faces. How your father hasn’t seen it, is a mystery,” she huffs.
It’s too good an opportunity to pass up. “Because he is moping around wishing he was with you,” I hiss back at her now. “Give him a chance, Mama, please.” I use this endearment on her, knowing she enjoys it, but knows we are all too old to call her that now. “I know you love each other. Talk to your other husbands. If they knew what it was like to be without you, maybe they will be more sympathetic to his plight?”
She is glaring at me, her green eyes starting to swirl. She is beyond mad that I’ve interfered. “Constantine has his reasons,” she says tightly.
“Which are?” I press.
“It’s complicated, and quite frankly, none of your business.”
“It is when my parents aren’t together. Why do Arathia and Delinda get that, but not me?”
It’s a low blow. A low fucking blow indeed.
Her face crumples and tears well up. “Oh, Savvie,” she wails. “I know, believe me, I do.”
“Then talk to them, please,” I beg her.
She hesitates for a long moment, but then she nods. “I’ll try,” she says quietly. “I’m not promising anything and please do not mention anything to your father. I just can’t give him that hope because I know this will not go down well at all.”
I nod, happy that she will at least try.
