She’s right.
We are too far into Light Fae lands, and judging by Jerrick’s pinched features, the Light Fae are on our asses as we stand here wasting time.
Jerrick scoops up our girl, his worried face about her condition probably matching my own.
Damn Anders. If I ever get within striking distance of him, he is dead.
We quickly and quietly, rush forward towards the border where Rook is waiting for us, pacing fretfully. We wanted to leave him behind as he was not doing so great, but we needed him close so he could tell us where to go. The second he said he sensed Savvie use her magick, I felt I could breathe again.
This has been the worst day of my life. Thinking that I’d lost the only woman that I’ve ever cared about, noloved, was something that was about to crush me under its weight.
“How is she?” Rook croaks.
“Not good,” Aefre murmurs, stroking her daughter’s forehead. “He must’ve completed the blood oath, and the further away from him she is, the worse she will feel.”
“Dammit,” I mutter. “How do we break it?” I demand then into the silence.
“First things,” Aefre says and gestures for Jerrick to get Savvie to safety. “Leave these assholes to me.”
We all turn to look at the horde of Light Fae that are rushing towards us.
In a spectacular show, which I suspect was for our benefit as well as theirs, Aefre Shifts to her Dragon in a burst of scales, the black crystals rippling down her flanks as she roars and sends a stream of fire straight at the marauding Light Fae.
Ignoring their shrieks, I admire the Queen of the Dragons in all her glory. She is a sight to behold, and fighting alongside her was pretty amazing. Or it could have been if I hadn’t been so worried about Savvie.
Turning from her, I grab Theo by the wrist, then Rookwith my other hand and remember the old man just before I Puffport out.
He gives me a guileless look back, and I sigh. Savvie clearly trusts him, or she wouldn’t have rescued him.
I stick my elbow out, and he hesitantly takes it, but once he has a firm grip, I Puffport back to the Palace. I still have no idea how I’m able to Puffport on Dark Fae lands. Maybe it has something to do with me being only half Light Fae. Something that I’m deeply ashamed about right now, and even though it brought me here and to Savannah, it is something that I will never explore further after this.
We land in the Palace grounds and I watch as Theo shoots off with his Vampire speed. He has been quiet since we found Savvie. Rook passes out at my feet, and I still have the old man to contend with.
Hauling Rook over my shoulder, fireman-style, I head towards his lodgings. The need to go to Savvie is clawing at me, but I can’t leave the poor guy lying in the middle of the grounds, unconscious and vulnerable, around a very pissed-off Dark Fae King at the obvious relationship between the Shifter and the heir to the throne.
After a beat, the old man says, “Rath’Na. Septimus is your father, yes?”
Giving him a fierce glare, I pause. “How do you know that?”
“He is the only one of her sons that Ididn’tconceive with that whore,” he says with such a sad tone, it affects me in a way that only Savvie has ever touched me.
“Oh,” I mutter and then frown. “So, you’re my... not-grandfather?”
He gives me a hard look. “It would appear so.”
“Huh,” I murmur and then kick open the door to Rook’s room. It’s a very sparse living space. Worse than Jerrick’s,and that is pretty bare. “Why don’t I remember you, and why are you here?” I ask after I gently drop Rook onto the bed and make sure he’s comfortable. However, I’ve done my bit. It’s past time I go to see Savvie now.
“The girl will fill you in,” he replies. He is looking green around the edges, and I figure he must’ve been held captive there for a fucking long time.
I nod. “Come,” I say and take him by the arm, Puffporting straight into Savvie’s room and damn the consequences of such a brazen move.
When we land, I let go of Rath’Na, and go straight to Savvie. She is conscious but still coughing up blood, and it’s streaming out of her nose.
Jerrick is trying his best to stanch the flow, but it’s a fruitless task.
“How do we break this?” I ask again, shoving Theo out of the way so that I can take her hand.
“Hey!” he snaps, flashing his fangs at me, but I ignore him.
