“Itisdifferent,’ Jerrick says. “We cannot in good conscience let you do this. We need to protect you.”
She looks at me, those big eyes imploring me to disagree with them. “I can’t,” I tell her, shaking my head.
She purses her lips and looks at her parents.
“Nope, not a chance,” Aefre says. “He has wanted me all this time,Iwill go to him.”
“No!” she shrieks at her mother, making us all jump. “This ismyfight now. Please, I need to do this. He violated my mind to make this oath. He took advantage of me in a moment of weakness to finish it, he locked me upand threatened truly awful things…” She grimaces, but it’s just a front so she won’t cry. I can see the tears shining in her eyes. “Not to mention, I owe it to Rath’Na,” she adds stiffly.
“You don’t owe him anything,” I protest vehemently.
“Oh, girl,” Rath’Na says, coming over to her and giving her a soft smile. “Don’t bring me into this. You don’t get to fight my battles for me. You fight your own. Go out there and show this Kingdom that you are a true Queen, that your grandfather has chosen correctly.”
She beams at him, and I feel the strong need to kick his ass. His words have too much influence over her. I don’t get it. Why is she listening to him?
“Savvie,” I start, but she pulls her hand from mine and puts it to my lips.
“I’m doing this. It’s my mess. I will fix it.”
Then she rises up on her tiptoes to kiss me, then Jerrick and Theo.
“Aefre, stop her!” I roar as I grab her hand. “Vito! Drake!”
They stay where they are, not moving.
“Let her go,” Aefre says quietly as she grips Vito’s hand tighter. He is grim-faced but says nothing.
“We can fight this for her, son,” Drake says, his hand landing on my shoulder, “but she will never feel vindicated. You heard her. She needs to do this herself, and I trust her to do it. She wants this Kingdom more than anything, she won’t let them down by failing again. Her pride won’t take a second hit, and she is as stubborn as her mother.”
“Like father, like daughter,” Aefre snaps, but it’s out of sheer nervousness.
I know the feeling. Gritting my teeth, as I glare at the door where she disappeared. How am I supposed to let her go?
I look at Jerrick, but he looks as lost as I feel.
“We will wait for her at the border,” he rasps, his voice heavy with emotion. “That is all we can do.”
I nod stiffly. If she gets herself hurt, or worse, by that utter asshole, there will be nothing left of him to bury when I’m through with him.
Chapter 13
Savannah
My hands are shaking as I leave the Great Hall. I know I have to do this. I hope that I’m right that Anders won’t hurt me if I give him what he wants. My compliance and the promise of my body. I have no intention of giving him the latter, but Iamgoing to have to go as far as I can to get him into a vulnerable enough position. I need to make a quick stop before I go to meet him, and I hope that the Weapons Enchantress has ready what I asked for a few days ago.
A few minutes later, she wordlessly gestures me over to the cabinet where the wand is resting, and I give her a nod of thanks. No one knew about this except the two of us. It is my secret weapon. Infused in it is the same black magick as my swords, along with my blood so that only I can touch it, but it also encases the lightning that I instructed the Enchantress to draw out of the sky during the battle as it passed through Rook. I had no idea if she could harness this kind of power, but she wouldn’t be offering it to me if she hadn’t.
“Thank you,” I murmur and lift up the hem of my dress, to shove it into the back of my panties. No, it’s not the best hiding place, as Anders will find it before I use it on him, but for now, it is out of sight. I intend for this to be my trademark. I will have it on me at all times. The lightning will need recharging regularly. How regularly, we will find out, but I’m going to be a Fae Queenwitha wand. A cliché, but a highly effective one. I just have to get rid of Anders first.
The closer I walk to the border, the stronger I feel. The blood oath is drawing me to him. I hope that I can keep my wits about me and not fall under the spell of it.
Keep remembering your men.
Taking a deep breath when I see him in a white suit, sitting astride a pure white unicorn, four Guards flanking him, a lump forms in my throat. I didn’t go to check on Midnight before I came here. I was too focused on getting this over with.
I see his head turn towards me as he spots me, and I speed up my pace. Sooner is better.
“Savannah!” he calls out. “I’m surprised to see you so soon.”
