He shakes his head. “You aren’t, but as you have asked me directly, I won’t lie to you now.”

“Okay,” I say and throw my arms out to the sides when he doesn’t say anything else.

“It goes without saying, this stays between you and me.” He gestures to my men-statues.

“For now. That’s all you get,” I inform him, wondering why I’m giving him that much. I should be kicking his ass, but for some reason, I’m not. Nor do I want to, which concerns me. He is way more powerful than I thought, so who or what could he possibly be?

“Well?” I spit out.

“Well, my lovely Princess, I am not who you think I am. I am far more powerful than you could possibly imagine. I am Rathnir, the god of Dragons, andyou, dear girl, are more powerful than you could dream.”

Chapter 24

Rath’Na

As she stares at me, a smile playing on her pretty lips, I can tell she doesn’t believe me.

“The god of Dragons?” she scoffs. “Oh, please. You are a myth. Delinda told me all about it from one of her books while she was growing up.”

“Not a myth,” I mutter. “Although, I’m pleased to see that my ruse held up while I was gone.”

She gives me a perturbed frown. “Ruse?” Then she shakes her head and puts her hand up. “Quit the lying and give me the truth.”

“I have,” I say. “Let me start at the beginning.”

“Please do,” she drawls, folding her arms over her chest.

“Actually, the beginning is a very, very long time ago, so I’ll skip forward a little bit. Around six thousand years ago, I grew bored of my existence, the only one of my kind. So, I created a creature in my image, although a female, that I could breed with to make more Dragons.”

“Tiamat?” she asks with a raised eyebrow.

Ah, good. She’s starting to believe me.

“Indeed. But before we had sons, I had to create moreDragons for them to breed with, and for others to breed with them, and so on, thus securing the future of a brand-new race that would rule the Worlds. It soon became clear that the females of the species were superior in every way to the males, so I allowed Tiamat to take her place as the Empress of the Dragons. She knew who I was, of course, but with each passing year, she grew more dominant, more power-hungry, and more demanding. I soon grew weary of competing with her for everything and let her have it. She quickly forgot her place, and I let her, hiding in plain sight as her subservient husband as I observed the beings that I had created from my blood.”

I pause to gauge her reaction to this. She is astonished, but trying not to show it.

“Okay,” she says slowly. “But why hide? I don’t understand.”

“I was tired by this point of being a god. I wanted to see what it was like to be regular,” I answer carefully.

“So, if you are an all-powerful god, how did Aelfric manage to kidnap you?” she asks with a smirk.

“Not kidnap,” I snap. “He caught me off-guard, in a vulnerable position. It will never happen again; I can assure you.”

“Okay, answer me this, then. The Dragons and the Fae have always been purported to be the original creatures. If you were this god, all alone, where was your Fae counterpart?”

I smile at her. Now, we’re getting to the good part.

“I’m so glad you asked that,” I beam. “My Fae counterpart was a female, a goddess. When she saw what I had created with the Dragons, she eagerly jumped aboard the creation train and made the Fae.”

I see her face fall as she pouts. “So, we were second?”

“Not really,” I laugh. “The goddess herself was around from the same time as I was.”

“Where is she?” she demands, as I knew she would.

“She died. A very long time ago, in the battle between the Dragons and the Fae. Tiamat killed her, but not before she bore a biological daughter, a daughter who had a daughter, who had a son that you call ‘Gramps’.”
