“The feeling isn’t mutual, Cheska,” he replies. “You know thatheshouldn’t really be here, and you chose to leave because of it. I suggest you move along, and next time, file a request to bring him here first.”
She opens and closes her mouth like a goldfish, stumped for once.
“Humph,” she mutters and grabs my father’s hand, turning back to me. “This conversation isn’t over,Rook,” she emphasizes derisively to hurt me. “I will get what I came for.” Then she Puffports the two of them out, and I relax my shoulders.
She makes me so tense; I feel like I’m about to snap.
“Shift,” Jerrick says to me. “You look like you need it.”
“Thanks,” I mutter and give him a soppy look. “And thanks for getting rid of her.”
He shrugs. “It’s my job.” He turns and leaves me alone to strip off and Shift to my raven form.
I kind of wish they had stuck around to see me now. Oh, how they would be surprised. I’m as big as an eagle, and every time Savvie uses me, I grow bigger. One day, who knows how immense my bird form will be? Maybe, I will match my father’s enormous phoenix shape. I take flight and swoop through the air, enjoying the feel of the wind in my feathers. Without conscious thought, I find myself heading towards Savvie’s window ledge, but upon landing, I find her not alone. Theo is with her. He is on his knees, beseeching her. Probably about the blood thing. I know she will give in today. I can see it on her face. She was turned onwhen she watched him bite Trey. So was I. I really want to know what it feels like.
I decide not to intrude and leave them alone. She needs her time with the other men. Even though technically, she is supposed to still be with Trey, I feel like something has shifted. She no longer seems concerned about that. After what Ambrosia said, I thought it would be the opposite, that she would amp up her efforts to get pregnant with Trey. I wonder what’s changed. I think it has something to do with Rath’Na. I feel like we lost a bit of time between Ambrosia sweeping out and Savvie waking up from her faint. I don’t remember her passing out. Who is he that he has the power to freeze time?
Again, these questions bounce around my head, and I flap off to clear my head.
I do a sweep of the grounds and then further outside the Palace grounds. I don’t see anything untoward, just the Dark Fae going about their usual business. It is market day, and the crowds are plentiful. I go a bit further, towards the Light Fae lands, and all is quiet there. They are in mourning for yet another King.
Jerrick was right to lock Savvie down. She is in grave danger. Her status as Drake’s heir won’t save her from a trial and execution.
She is a willful woman, though, and will try to defy his orders. It’s up to us to make sure that she abides by his instructions to keep her safe.
I do another sweep and then another, and when I’m satisfied that there are no Light Fae on our lands, I head back to the rookery and Shift. I need her now in any way that she will have me.
Chapter 27
Theo
“Get up,” she snaps, but there’s no anger in her tone, just exasperation. I’ve been apologizing to her for ages now, needing her to know how sorry I am.
“I’m so sorry,” I say again, taking her hand.
“I know!” she yells. “And I’ve said that you don’t need to keep apologizing. I’m the one that’s sorry. I did wrong by you. You were only trying to survive. There’s nothing left to say.”
“He tried to entice me,” I add quietly. I have to tell her.
That gives her pause, and she purses her lips. “Really?” she asks eventually, scrunching up her nose. “He wants you?”
I take only a mild bit of offense at her incredulity. “Yes,” I say with a huff.
She giggles. “He has good taste then.” She shakes her head. “I still can’t believe you’ve met his human self. They are so very private and secretive.”
I shrug and stand up, feeling that this has definitelybeen resolved. Or the feeding from someone else part, at least.
“Will you allow me to bite you?” I ask, my eyes boring into hers, wanting to see her first reaction before she has a chance to hide it.
I see fear, but she squashes it. “Yes,” she says, her voice steady, but I can hear her heart pounding and smell the blood racing through her veins.
“I would never hurt you,” I say earnestly, taking her other hand and squeezing them both. “I would rather starve than take blood from you by force. This has to be your choice. Your decision.”
“It is,” she says defiantly. “I love you, Theo. I don’t want you to suffer needlessly, nor do I want you to feed from someone else.”
Her eyes flash with jealousy, and it makes me beam.
She gives me a grimace in return, but then her lips curve up in that pretty smile that lights up her eyes, and the jealousy turns to desire. “I saw how much Trey enjoyed it,” she whispers. “I want you to feed from me. I want to know what it’s like to give you my blood, knowing that it will sustain you and keep you strong.”
