“We need to talk,” she says and grabs my arm, hauling me into a small room near the Great Hall.

“What is it?” I ask, shifting awkwardly in her strong grip. She is a Vampire and can probably smell her daughter all over me. It makes me very uncomfortable.

She releases me and steps back to my relief. “I need you to promise me that you will keep Savvie safe or lose your own life protecting her.”

I give her a scathing look. She gives me one back, but she doesn’t scare me, even though she could crush me with her tiny fist if she wanted to.

“Of course I will,” I scoff. “I love her. I will marry her once this whole debacle with the blessed baby is over with. I’ve put her on lockdown and she will abide by it. I will make sure of it.”

“Oh?” she asks archly. “Because I have it on good authority that she is outside the Palace, right now.”

She gives me a smug smile, but I give it back, tenfold. “I know. She is in the rookery. Rook is watching over her from a distance.”

She narrows her eyes. I can’t tell if she is impressed with me or about to kick my ass.

“She is outside the Palace walls,” she points out unnecessarily.

“I’m aware. I gave this to her because she needs to talk and if not to me, or her other men, then her ravens. It will eat her alive otherwise,” I say grimly.

Her face goes softer and sadder. “I know,” she murmurs. “I wish that she hadn’t had to kill him herself.”

“Why didn’t you stop her?”

“You claim to know her so well,” she scoffs. “If we’d tried to stop her, she would have dug her heels in, gone off half-cocked and probably gotten herself killed!”

All true.

“I know,” I mutter. “At least the blood oath has been broken.”

“Thank. Fuck,” she agrees firmly.

We share a look and then she bites her lip. “You need to plan a siege to kill Ambrosia. Savvie won’t be safe until that little bitch is dead.”

“That’s treason in both Kingdoms,” I point out. “Unless the King gives me an order, I can’t do that. All I can do is make sure that Savvie is safe from her and I will. I promise you that.”

“What about this Rath’Na character that has taken a shine to her?”

I grimace. “She trusts him. I won’t get in the middle of whatever is happening there. She will do what she wants.”

“You think something is happening?” she asks conspiratorially.

“Not yet,” I admit truthfully, but I know it’s only a matter of time. Their chemistry is off the charts. We can all see it. No one wants to bring it up with her, though, afraid of the answer.

“Watch him around her. He is ancient and clearly sniffing around. I don't want him taking advantage of her.”

I give her a curious look. “Why don’t you?”

She sighs. “Savvie has told me to get back to my life.”

I choke back the laugh. “Oh,” I say, struggling to keep the smile off my face.

She rolls her eyes. “I intend to speak to him before I go, but I wanted to find you first. Make sure you know that if anything happens to her, I will hold you personally responsible.”

“Understood,” I say, wanting to give her that reassurance. “Your daughter is my only priority.”

She nods and leaves me alone in the room to wonder about Savvie and Rath’Na. I fear their relationship is inevitable. I can’t stop it. All I can do is support whatever she decides to do.

I head out of the room and out of the Palace to find Rook and make sure that Savvie is safe.
