“He isn’t going to die,” Rath says, full of confidence. I wish it was in me, but I’m more inclined to think it is in his power transfer thingy.
She glares at him and then gives him a triumphant smile. “If they are looking for Dragon’s, then he won’t be able to get through with your magick!”
He gives her a beam. “Oh, don’t worry about that, my goddess. The magick I will give him will latch onto the Vampire in him and make him stronger. It’s like a chameleon; changes to the creature.”
“Chameleon?” she mutters, her face going wary as she looks down. “I’ve heard that word before…”
Her eyes ping back up to Rath’s. “Is it rare?”
“Very. Only me. That I’m aware of.”
She grits her teeth. “And my sister,” she says, lifting her chin up, almost daring him to comment.
His eyes narrow. “The Dragon Empress?” he asks. “Interesting. You know this for sure?”
“I heard my mother discussing Delinda with Uncle D. once. She mentioned that Delinda was a chameleon. I didn’t know what it meant.”
I see her bottom lip quiver slightly before she bites the inside.
“Well, well,” Rath says. “Now I definitely need to meet this sister of yours.”
“Over my dead body,” Savvie growls under her breath.
Rath gives her a puzzled look, but he dismisses it and turns back to me. “Come, young Vampire. I have much to teach you.”
I give her a quick kiss, but she doesn’t return it. She is pissed off as all Hell and will make us all pay for overruling her later, I’m sure. I follow Rath out of the room, with Trey, hoping that this doesn’t backfire on our asses and that I disappoint Savvie.
Or die.
Yeah, that too.
Chapter 9
Savannah
Furious doesn’t even cover it. If appealing to them as the woman who loves themortheir Queen apparently, doesn’t work, then what the fuck am I supposed to do to convince them this is a bad idea? Ask them to reconsider while I’m coming all over their dicks? I pause in my action of stalking back to my office, having left Jerrick and Rook under a massive thundercloud.
Shaking my head at that preposterous thought, I keep on walking. That is manipulative and not how I want our decisions to be made. But nor do I want to be railroaded, outvoted or not taken seriously. This is going to become a problem unless we can find a way to make this fair. But I’m fucked if I know how. If push comes to shove on this, I may have to throw down and pull rank, properly. That includes a pretty pair of silver wings and a badass wand brought to the party.
I snort as I realize that Rath will get a major boner from that.
Truth is, if women got boners, I’d have one too. The goddess power is highly arousing when mingled with Rath’s. It is definitely something I wish to explore further.
Thinking of Rath’s power, I go cold suddenly. If I’d wanted to keep Trey away from Delinda before, that was nothing compared to how I feel about Rath. There is no way that Rath’Na will ever set eyes on my gorgeous, kickass, Dragon Empress sister if I have anything to say about it. I would be a fucking fool. He was married to the last one, for the gods’ sake.
I let out a snarl of unfettered rage and jealousy which frightens Petle, who is hovering near my office door.
Pulling it back, I give her a tight smile and slip through the door, closing it quietly behind me. I stare at the folders on my desk and then sit with a sigh and pick up the top one from Jerrick. I smile as I see it is a full outline of what his army does, what is expected of them, what he can tell them to do and what I must tell them to do if the need arises. He has added the layout of every security measure around the Kingdom, updated with a ‘code peacock’ alert which makes me snicker uncontrollably. When did he have time to get all of this done since last night?
I’m still smiling when there is a soft knock at the door, and Trey pokes his head in.
“You busy?” he asks.
“Yes, but come in. Please tell me they gave up on their quest to give Theo a power bump?” I beg.
“Sorry, no, but I was surplus to requirements. So, I came to give you something instead.”
“Oh?” I ask archly, sitting back in my chair and giving him a saucy leer.
