“Not that, you sex-crazed woman,” he laughs. “Although…” He looks around. “I’m sure we could get up to some naughty stuff in here.”
“Pass! This was my grandfather’s office!” I shriek, laughing even though the thought makes me go green.
“It’s nice to see you smile, little Faerie,” he says softly. “Things got a bit heated before.”
“You don’t say,” I drawl. “I’m not happy about being outvoted.”
“I know,” he says with a sigh. “It’s not a great arrangement. Democracy may not be the best option sometimes, but I’m fucked if I know what to suggest.”
“Same,” I admit with a sigh. “Anyway, what did you come to give me?”
He surprises me by coming around to my side of the desk and dropping to his knees. He holds out a small black box, and my heart thumps.
“My proposal was not done right,” he starts. “I’d wanted to sweep you off your feet and give you a thousand reasons why I love you and want to be your husband. Seeing as that didn’t happen, but you still said ‘yes’, I can at least give you this.”
He opens the box, and I gasp. “Oh my,” I murmur, as I take in a huge purple stone surrounded by small sparkling diamonds.
“It matches your eyes,” he says with a small smile.
“Oh, Trey, it’s perfect!” I cry and let him slip it on my finger.
“I know that this is something overt and is not Fae or Dragon tradition, for that matter, but I want you to have it. I want something that says you are mine and that I am yours. I also know that this will push the other men’s noses out of joint, but…” He shrugs. “You will be my wife, and I want that to be acknowledged.”
“I want that too,” I say, “but at some point, I will also be their wife too,” I add lightly.
“I know,” he says just as lightly. “Humor me for now, though, okay?”
I nod and lean forward to kiss him softly. I don’t know how the other men will feel about this symbol, but hopefully, it won’t be a concern. They all know the score. Trey and I have to be married and produce an heir. It’s the way it is.
There is a soft knock at the door, so I call, “Come in.”
Trey rises to his feet and stands by my side as I scoot my chair forward.
“Ma’am,” Petle says. “Is now a good time to go over some of these reports?”
“Sure,” I say with a smile and beckon her in. “And call me Savvie, please.”
She gives me a look of utter horror. “No,” she cries. “Your Majesty... I...”
“Please,” I say with what I hope is an encouraging smile.
Her eyes are full of fear, like it’s a trap or something. “Okay,” she croaks out, but I know that it’s not going to happen.
The three of us stand in silence for a minute and then she glares at Trey. “If you don’t mind?” she says, indicating the door.
He snorts and gives her a quick bow. “Of course,” he says and then kisses the top of my head. “We’ll catch up later, my love.”
I nod quickly and watch as he leaves me and Petle.
“He is a good choice,” she states, all business-like, like there was any other option to begin with.
“He sure is,” I agree with a goofy beam, looking at my new ring.
Petle catches sight of it and lets out a small gasp. “Oh, that’s beautiful.” She beams at me, and I canfeelher approval of Trey go up by several notches.
“So, do you want to start with the nice or nasty?” she asks, sitting down in the chair opposite me.
I look at her askance. “Nasty?”
