She nods. “Sorry, but you now have to deal with the prisoners, those on trial, the disputes...”
“Got it,” I say weakly and then clear my throat, sucking it up. “Start with the worst,” I add, “then my day can only get better.”
“Good philosophy,” she murmurs and then opens the top file to go into detail about who is up for the death sentence next week.
I gulp and try to remind myself that Iknewthe Dark Fae, well, allthe Fae are a race of slightly archaic, somewhat barbaric beings, and this is what I signed up for. The good, the bad and the ugly. These are my people, and this is my rule. Perhaps in time, I could try to bring in more lenient sentences, but today isn’t that day. Trying to accomplish such great acts will take time. But it is definitely something that I need to do. For my own sanity and to make the Fae better and more tolerant. We will need it once Ambrosia is gone, and I take the Light Fae rule by the horns.
I blink as that thought came out of nowhere. Sure, not completely nowhere, but it wasn’t on my mind this morning when we were talking about taking her prisoner.
I realize that it’s the goddess talking. The Fae are hers to ruletogether, not apart. She –I– want us united and living in harmony before we even attempt to make up with the Dragons. I have to start thinking about this power as mine now. It flows through me, it makes me Rath’s other half. But before I can think about being a goddess, I have to get this Queen thing right.
Chapter 10
Raize
Left in the meditation room after Savannah stormed off, pissed off beyond belief, I know the epic thunderstorm outside that came on rather suddenly, is most definitely our Queen's doing. It makes me smile slightly, but then the cloud of worry drops over me again.
I haven’t been able to Shift since I was struck down last night. Not for lack of trying. I try now but as expected, it doesn’t work. I don’t know why this is happening or if I will ever be able to Shift again. The loss of that ability will affect me, but it will devastate me if I can’t help Savannah as her familiar anymore. I need to fix this before she finds out. I don’t want her thinking I’m weak or broken, but at the same time, if she needs me now and I can’t help her... then what?
Ambling out of the room, wandering in no particular direction, I see Jerrick, who’d left the room shortly after Savvie, drag a pretty woman into a dark corner.
He looks pissed.
I pause and hide behind a big black granite column. I feel terrible spying on him, but I need the distraction from my own worry for just a moment.
They are whispering to each other in a fierce way. Her eyes are flashing dangerously. She has a temper, that one. Jerrick grabs her by the arm and turns them so that he has blocked her into the corner. I can’t see her now that his giant bulk is in the way.
I’m madly curious, but I need to leave them to it. Whatever is going on there is nothing to do with me.
“Stay away from herandme,” I hear Jerrick growl as I turn to leave.
Hesitating, I look back at them. Are they talking about Savvie? If so, then thisismy business.
“Jerrick?” I call out. “Everything okay?”
He turns quickly, a look of guilt on his face that surprises me. As he turns, I see the woman pull her hand out of his pants and give me a little wiggle of her fingers, a sultry smile on her face.
Speechless, I gape at him.
I never thought that Jerrick would bethatguy.
“Rook,” he snarls as if he is pissed off with me. “This isn’t... fuck!” He gives the woman a fierce look that does nothing to deter her, and stalks over to me, gripping my elbow and practically dragging me down the corridor.
“Last warning, Letisha,” he hisses over his shoulder at the woman.
“What is going on?” I ask.
“It’s not what it looks like,” he says curtly. “Letisha is an ex. She is jealous of Savvie and wants to cause trouble. Forget what you saw.”
It’s an order and I don’t take kindly to it. I’m not one of his soldiers, and I’m certainly not forgetting seeing him with his dick in another woman's hand.
“Have you told Savvie about her?” I ask, pulling my arm out of his grip.
Furious purple eyes bore into mine. “No, and you won’t either. Savvie doesn’t need to be bothered by this. She has enough on her plate, and Letisha is my responsibility. I will get rid of her, don’t worry.”
He stalks off, leaving me to stare after him.Get rid of her.
