I sigh and make a decision. I hurriedly catch up with him and, this time, grabhiselbow. “Fix it and fix it now. If I see trouble brewing for Savvie with that woman, then I will go to her and tell her what I saw earlier. Got it?”
He lets out a low growl. It makes me wince slightly. I’ve never spoken to anyone like that before, and I choose the Head of the Dark Fae Guard to try it out. I must be fucking nuts, with a death wish on top.
“Threatening me, Rook? You’ve grown a pair,” he scoffs.
“I’m looking out for our Queen and the woman that we both love, so take your fucking attitude and check it,” I snarl, suddenly losing my temper over the worry that I’m holding onto. “Take it however you want, but you fix that messtodayor I go to Savvie with what I saw. If you want to take the risk of explaining to her why another woman had her hand on your cock, good luck with that.”
I storm off, a small smile forming on my lips. That felt fucking good. In spite of the situation, which is no laughing matter, I feel pretty damn good. I’ve always been the one to back down and avoid confrontation. My mother is a complete bitch who never lets me forget how disappointed she is with me. It was worse when she lived here. I suppose, in a way, I’m glad that she abandoned me. Left me to a life of servitude to the King. I feel I’m better off than had she stayed here and crushed what little will I had left under her boot. My father doesn't even factor intoit. He is so disinterested in me that he can barely even look at me.
Although, I ponder now, I could do with his advice. Has this ever happened to him before, not being able to Shift? The only other Shifters I know are Trey and Aefre. Well, I suppose also Rath’Na now. Aefre has left the Kingdom, and the thought of discussing this with Rath leaves me shuddering with shame.
With a sigh, I figure that leaves Trey.
He may be a tough nut, but I don’t feel that he would humiliate me.
I hope anyway.
Heading outside, I keep my eye out for him.
I find him sitting on the wall that divides the Palace grounds from the outside land.
“Hey,” he says, as I approach.
“Hey,” I reply. “I’ll cut right to the chase. Have you ever not been able to Shift before?”
I’ve taken him by surprise, but he rallies quickly. “No, why? You got trouble?” He leaps off the wall and comes closer, giving me a scrutinizing stare.
I hold his gaze for a moment but then drop it. “Yeah, ever since the other night with the ravens. I think Ambrosia’s magick did something to me.”
He shakes his head. “No, it’s not you. Whatever magick Savvie is now dabbling in, is what has disrupted your balance.”
I frown at him in confusion. “What do you mean?”
“I’ve been observing her magick since I got here. It has a very distinct purple glow. Silver is not her color. I saw what she did to you and the other ravens. She brought you back to life. That’s Black magick if I ever saw it, yet, it’s not Black magick. I don’t know what it is, but you can bet your life and mine that Rath has something to do with it.”
“Uhm,” I stammer. He has thrown me for a loop. “Are you saying she’s doing something dangerous? That she brought me back to life because I wasn’t going to resurrect on my own?”
I feel sick. Did she do this to me by being reckless?
“I can’t answer for your resurrection ability,” he says steadily. “But I can tell you without a doubt that our Queen is hiding a new set of powers that she doesn’t want us to know about. How she got them, why she wants to keep it a secret and what they are, are all questions we need to band together to ask her.”
“Confrontation?” I croak out. I don’t want to do that.
“Less aggressive,” he says. “We love her, and we aren’t out to accuse her, but she needs to tell us what is going on. If she is headed down a dangerous path, especially with Ambrosia out to get her, then we all need to be on the same page so that we can help her.”
“Agreed,” I murmur. “So, you think I’m doomed to live without Shifting again?”
He gives me a scathing look for thinking about myself at a time like this, but then he sighs. “I dunno, kid. Maybe once we know what is really going on, we can fix whatever she did to you.”
I nod slowly, a feeling of utter dread washing over me. I hear the screech of the ravens up above and look up. They are flocking over the Palace, swooping and diving, cawing so loudly they are agitating each other.
Trey looks up as well with a darkness falling over his eyes. “I don’t know much about Dark Fae omens, but that can’t be good.”
I remain silent.
He is not wrong.
