“No idea. I go where I’m told,” she answers me quite rudely.

Pursing my lips, trying not to let loose on her about manners and respect, instead, I give her a haughty look and say stiffly, “Go about your business.”

She scurries off. I watch her go, finding this whole thing a bit odd. I will have to make sure that I find out why this Fae has been assigned here, and without my knowledge, after I just sit and try not to think about being a Queen for a minute or ten.

Pushing open my bedroom door, I close it quietly and walk over to the window seat to sit down, staring outside. I peer closer as something seems amiss and then open the window so that I can see better.

“Oh!” I exclaim as I see the ravens going wild outside. They are covering the sky, flying all around the Palace and cawing loudly. I stand up and lean out of the window. Seeing Rook and Trey underneath me, I wave to them. Trey waves back, but Rook is too busy trying to control the birds. It’s like they’ve gone crazy.

“What’s going on?” I shout down.

“You tell us!” Trey calls back, a grim look on his face.

Gulping, I stare down at him silently as the birds flock around my head, squawking and making a fuss.

“Ack!” I screech as suddenly the birds rush at me, flying directly for my head and the open window of my bedroom. “Gah!” I scream as I’m pushed back, and a stream of hundreds of ravens pour into my bedroom, knocking me flat on my ass. They scratch me with their claws and peck at me with their beaks.

I don’t want to hurt them, but I have to defend myself from this unexpected attack, so hold up my hands and scrunch my eyes shut as I push out a forcefield. The ravens fall back but persist in their efforts to get to me. The noise is deafening, and I cry out again as some of my men crash through the doorway at the exact same moment that a silver ribbon of magick rushes out of my hands and wraps itself around every single one of the birds, calming them instantly.

“What the fuck?” Jerrick growls.

“Savvie! You’ve got some explaining to do!” Trey says brusquely.

“Erm…” I stammer and then meet Rath’s glowing green eyes as he stares at me with a look that speaks volumes.

I’m so busted.

Tearing my eyes away from Rath’s, I look at Trey again. He is giving me a questioning glare. Jerrick looks concerned. Rook finally arrives in the doorway to complete silence with Theo close behind him.

“Erm,” I stammer again and take the hand that Jerrick offers to help me stand up. I brush off my dress and then crouch down to hold my hand out to the ravens surrounding our feet.

They come to me, letting me pet them and stroke them before they fly off, leaving me baffled as to why they attacked me in the first place.

It is then that a realization dawns on me. I feel connected to them in a way that I’ve never felt before. They feel familiar. They feelmine. I don’t get that they were attacking me, but something else. Maybe they were trying to get me to face a part of myself that I have thus far been hiding from myself and my men. An omen, if you will, that I have to accept the goddess part of me and stop keeping her a secret.

I stand up straight again and then say, “Close the door, please. We need to talk.”

Taking in a deep breath as the men come further into the room, Rath shuts the door, leaning against it and bringing his godstaff to his hand. Of course, it lights up, and my wand, strapped to my leg in its safety holster, zings straight to it, hovering next to the staff in midair expectantly.

I sigh and turn around to face the rest of my men.

“So, turns out that I’m much more than just the Queen of the Dark Fae,” I start. I mean, why beat about the bush now?

“Oh?” Trey presses.

“As you know, we informed you that Rath is the god of the Dragons. Well, I am his counterpart…”

“You aren’t a Dragon. What are you talking about?” Trey interrupts rudely.

“Shut the fuck up, will you,” Jerrick snarls at him. “Let her speak.”

I give him a grateful smile, but he doesn’t return it. He is as pissed off as Trey is that I’ve kept something from them.

“No, I am Fae. But as you know the Fae and the Dragons are the original creatures. As Rath was the god of the Dragons, so he had a Fae counterpart. A Faegoddesscounterpart. That’s now me.”
