Raize
“Any clue?” Theo asks.
“Nope,” I reply with a huff. “Whatever they are reacting to, obviously, has to do with Savvie. There is nothing I can do. They won’t listen to me.”
“Not even in your bird form?” he asks, looking up again.
I gulp. Seeing as I still can’t Shift, who knows?
“We need to get going. Savvie is making her announcement soon.”
Theo looks back at me and nods. “Let’s go. Something tells me the ravens will still be up there later.”
I don’t disagree.
We turn to head off when Jerrick storms towards us under a small thundercloud.
“Where have you been?” he snaps.
Pointing upwards, I say, “Trying to get them to calm down.”
Jerrick looks up and then back at me with a sigh. “Another ‘omen’?” he drawls.
“Something like that,” I snort.
Jerrick sobers up quickly. “You need to come inside quickly. There has been a threat against Savvie, and she needs to act quickly. She wants to talk to you two before she does something that I’m still not sure she should do.”
“What?” Theo asks, instantly full of concern, hastening his pace to keep up with Jerrick’s giant strides.
Hanging back slightly, I give the ravens one last look. “What are you trying to tell her this time?” I murmur.
One of the ravens suddenly swoops down and lands on my shoulder.
“Rook!” Jerrick calls me.
Looking over, I see him make an annoyed gesture to me.
“Shall we?” I ask the bird, stroking her head.
Curiously, I blink when she peers into my eyes, and I see a glisten of silver in her black beady eyes. Somehow, I start to form a thought, which turns into an idea which blossoms into a workable theory on why these ravens are acting the way they are. I hasten my pace and catch up with the other two men, deciding not to tell anyone except Savvie of the working in my brain in case I’m wrong and make a complete fool of myself. She still makes me so nervous, but feeling like an idiot in front of the other men is way worse for my male ego.
Jerrick leads us to Savvie’s office and ushers us inside.
Theo is quick to go to her and kiss her, but I’m suddenly full of anxiety. Will she know that I can’t Shift anymore, rendering me useless to help?
Her eyes land on mine, and I gulp. They have that same shimmer of silver that the birds do, and when the bird on my shoulder suddenly flies at her, in that moment, I know I’m right about my theory. She has connected herself to the birds, as they have to her. They are part of her. They are trying to get to her so that…
There is an audible inhalation of breath in the room as Savvie, quite unconsciously, it seems, tethers the raven to her by a strand of silver magic.
“What?” she asks, looking at us gaping at her.
I point to the raven now settled on her shoulder; the ribbon quite clear. The sense of betrayal I feel that the raven used me to get to her is a sharp sting before I brush it off as a ridiculous feeling. This one was clearly wily enough, and I took the initiative. But then, I always did think there was something special about her.
“Your goddess powers are growing, my love,” Rath says with a smile. “The ravens are attaching themselves to you.”
“That’swhy they are going nuts outside!” Theo exclaims.
I give him a vicious look and grunt. “I came to that conclusion a few moments ago,” I mutter, but I have no idea why I bother. Once again, my nervousness in coming forward has left me in the rear of the pack.
