Prologue

Dylan Hoffman set the last box onto the crowded desk in Tammy’s brand-new office.

She was really doing it. She’d opened her own financial planning and taxes office to serve the residents of Darby Montana, and the surrounding areas.

As her and Tawk’s friend, Dylan was so damn proud of her.

The Cold Foot Crew had gathered to help her set up the new office. There was some construction that needed to be done with the bathroom and a leaky roof, but the Crew was on it.

In the hallway, Dylan’s brother, Garret, was having a moment with his mate, Raynah, and their baby, Breah. They were talking low, the baby snuggled between them. The smile on Garret’s face settled something inside of Dylan. His brother was okay. Better than okay.

No one knew. No one knew what he was about to do.

No one but Tawk, who was watching him like a hawk.

“You good?” Tawk asked him low.

Dylan nodded. “Always,” he lied.

Tawk glanced at Garret and Raynah, and back to him. “I know why you’re going.”

Dylan doubted it. He hadn’t talked to anyone about the obsession.

“When are you leaving?” Tawk murmured.

“I’m packed and ready. I turned in my work truck to my job. Said goodbye to the team today.”

“You’re leaving today?” Tawk asked in surprise.

“This is my last hoorah with the Crew.”

“Fuck, man,” Tawk rumbled. That Sentry Dragon didn’t feel like other people did. He didn’t have the same emotions, butDylan could tell he didn’t want him to leave. They’d become close over the last few months since he and Tammy had officially joined the Cold Foot Crew.

“Are you sure?” Tawk asked. “You won’t have any back-up.”

“Don’t need it.”

Tawk shook his head and looked at Garret again. “Your brother will be pissed when he finds out.”

“He will understand. Buy me time, will you?” Dylan asked of his friend. “Let me get out of his reach, and he won’t be able to change my mind.”

“But he wouldn’t want you doing this. Look at him. He’s fine. He’s happy.”

Aaah. Dylan lifted his chin higher and smiled at Tawk. Clever dragon. Maybe he’d figured out Dylan after all. “I’m not happy. I have to do this.”

“If you are hunting, I can go with you,” Tawk offered.

Dylan shook his head, feeling the urge to back out of the open doorway and escape. “This is mine, Tawk. This is something I need to do on my own. It’s a family thing.”

Tammy was watching their exchange now and looked like she was about to start asking questions, so Dylan announced, “I have shit to accomplish.” He gave the busy Crew a wave and then made his way over to Garret and Raynah. “See you later, loser,” he teased, and punched Garret gently on his arm. He barely resisted the urge to tell Raynah to take care of him. That wily croc shifter would figure out something was wrong and ruin everything.

“See you tomorrow,” Garret said with a grin. “Family dinner. Raynah is making chicken parmesan.”

Garret would hear a lie, so Dylan nodded and gave Raynah a wink and gave a two-fingered wave to them both.

He blew out a breath to steady himself as he walked away from his brother.

He would probably never see him again.
