“We will fix that.This is going to go public, and these policies are going to blow wide open.If they did it to you, they have done it before.”
She chuckled.“Other couples plan a honeymoon.”
“I believe this will be more of a relief for both of us.”
She smiled.“I think it will.We can ask the prefect about things at the wedding of her niece.”
“We will start it before then.Are you taking the day off tomorrow after we go to city hall?”
“Should I?”
“You might want to.Our lunch might drag on and trickly into dinner.Khasta has a ton of pictures lined up.We will be indulging her for quite a while.”
“Well, Khassi did make the gown.”
“Exactly.She wants to use you for her own amusement.”Worro smirked.“When we are done, it is back to Klauz’s, and from there, I sweep you away for the rest of the night.”
“That sounds nice.So, I don’t have to fuss or worry?”
“Nope.Just let me take care of you for a change.Trust me to be there.”
Her gaze shot to his.He smiled.“Yes, I know.I wouldn’t trust me either.I was there, and then I was gone, and when you saw me again, I was pursuing another woman.If I had been in your position, I would have beaten the hell out of me.”
“Yes, and I would have been a crazy fan who attacked a respected team member.But they would have done it quietly and topped up your selective memory.”She shrugged.“My citizenship would have been revoked, and I would have been kicked out of the country.”
“That’s very specific.”
“That’s what I was threatened with about four months after I was using the projector.I stalked you online and wanted to speak to you, so I went to a coffee shop where you were meeting with the team, and someone stopped me and told me what would happen if I kept chasing you.”
He stiffened.“Who stopped you?”
“I am pretty sure you know.”
He exhaled.“Vaika.”
“Yeah, and when Heraina was attacked and I learned that the monster who came after me was hired to do what he did, there was a sick logic to it.”
“You are telling me that...”
“The man who attacked me was hired.He was hired to come after me while you were out on a mission.It had to be when I wasn’t at work, and I had to be alone.”
He was tense under her.“I see.I should have seen sooner.Misker has mentioned that Heraina’s grandmother had twisted visions and shared them with others.The Sethir court has been infested with them for decades.I will ask Riithan to investigate Vaika.If she comes out tainted, she will be given therapy; if not, she will go to prison.”
She looked at him.“I am sorry.”
“My sister gave you immeasurable pain, but you are sorry?”
“I would give my life for Wellin.If he twists into something terrible, it would break my heart.”
Worro looked at her and smiled.“Thank you for understanding, but if it went this deep, I am not going to forgive.”
She sighed.“Good.I am not either.”
He stood and carried her out of the office, to the elevator, and up to her office.
He opened the door, and Zera was sitting behind her desk.“Oh, there you are.Keera, I need you to take the next two weeks off.Paid.”
