“You will take good care of her, won’t you?” the Duchess said, her tone changed from harsh to pleading.
She knows she has already lost.
“Of course, Your Grace. As my wife, Lady Alison will want for nothing and in time, she may even grow to love me.”
“Yes,” the Duke said. “That is how it often works. And, Belmont, I wish to discuss this matter further with my wife and with my daughter in private, of course. I do hope you understand.”
“Naturally, Your Grace.”
Rupert smiled but inside he felt nothing but disgust for the Duke. He had no need to discuss the matter with anyone, let alone the womenfolk. It was the Duke’s decision, and no one else’s. That he wanted to engage their pretty little heads showed he thought rather too much of his wife and daughters.
Once we are married, I shall ensure she knows better than to think herself my equal.
“Excellent,” the Duke said, ending the conversation. “I will be in contact shortly, but I imagine the answer will be in the affirmative.”
