“In that case,” Thomas said. “After our meeting, you are to return to her and bring her here. We shall all get to know each other, and I can provide you with rooms that I have no doubt are of a better standard.”
Luke sagged with relief, grateful for all the help Thomas seemed willing to give them.
“Thank you,” he said. “She will be pleased to meet you, I know it.”
“Now,” Thomas said, putting his hands firmly on the table, indicating he was ready to get down to business. “The next big question is, what are we going to do about it?”
“Hm.”
Luke sat back in his chair, the familiar pain in his chest returned. As a servant—and a disgraced one at that—he really had no power to fix his current circumstances, even if the Duke had decided not to send him to the gaol with his sister.
“Your employment certainly won’t be an issue,” Thomas said, “and your financial concerns will, of course, be taken care of.”
“Yes, but… the Duke, and Lady Alison? And then there’s the Earl and—”
Thomas gasped, his eyes lighting up.
“I have just the idea!”
