He was quiet for a moment before he said, “I’m the only Norlon here.”
“So?”
“No one else will be able to scent your arousal.”
I groaned. He was right that I’d been worried about that, but still. “Shut up.”
“All my guards are outside.”
“Seriously, just give me?—”
“Let’s go. You have until we rejoin them to calm yourself.”
Bossy. Fucker.
And yet I still followed him when he walked out. It wasn’t that I was, like, obeying orders or anything; I just didn’t want to be in the testing room alone. I followed him out of the room and down the hall because it was the logical thing to do.
I probably should’ve walked in front of him so I couldn’t see his tail.
CHAPTER 4
CMDR. SEIWA HEREMOD
Thank the goddess that my little mate was receptive to the idea of… Well, letting me claim him wasn’t what he was allowing, because Ellis had no idea that hewasmy mate. For the moment, he was only agreeing to sex with someone he was attracted to. I could accept that for now, and I certainly didn’t want to ruin everything by proclaiming my desire to make him mine for the rest of our lives. Which, logically, sounded ridiculous so I understood why humans would have difficulty believing such things.
But each time I looked at him, my mind quieted of everything except pleasing him. I’d never had a lover who could own my attention so fully just by looking at me with his expressive brown eyes. Scent be damned, that alone had convinced me that mates were real, and Ellis was mine.
I could convince him over time. After all, the humans were at least fifty years behind us on so many fronts that I wouldn’t be going anywhere for a very long time to come. That the prince had thought my team and I could simply upgrade the humans to our level in a few days said how little he understood. The humans couldn’t maintain what they didn’t understand! If we handed one of our ships to them, they’d die in space the firsttime literallyanythingwent wrong. And something always went wrong. So I wasn’t going anywhere, and I’d do my best to make sure Ellis stayed with me.
We were on the shuttle again, going back to Cleveland to drop off the agents that had come with us to that adorable testing facility. Ellis sat by himself in a seat near the cockpit, which meant he would be one of the last people to depart. When we touched down, I sprinted from my seat to stand in front of him as he unbuckled.
Immediately, he fumbled the buckle and glanced down the row to his fellow humans. Did he fear their judgment? I took a step back, and Ellis finished freeing himself from his seat. None of the humans looked his way, instead crowding in front of the ramp that descended to let them out of the shuttle. As Ellis stood up, his gaze flicked over each of my Cero guards, who remained seated.
I tried reassuring Ellis. “No one minds.”
He gulped and nodded, looking everywhere but at me now. “Um, I guess I’ll see you tomor?—”
No, no. After that kiss, I couldn’t let him leave. “Come up to the ship with me.”
Those bewitching brown eyes of his captivated me and his delectable lips parted.
I couldn’t let him leave, but I could be less commanding about keeping him with me. I cleared my throat. “Would you please come up to the ship with me?”
The corner of his mouth quirked up in a grin for just a second, vanishing when he watched his fellow humans leave the shuttle. “Can I? I don’t have my passport or anything. Can I just…leave the planet whenever I want to?”
I frowned at him, not comprehending. “You think you need permission to leave?”
“Don’t I?”
“Are there human laws that would prevent you from traveling?”
“Well… No.”
I cocked my head at him. Did he not want to go with me? Or was it that he simply wasn’t comfortable with space travel? After seeing the level of tech humans had available for such things, I couldn’t blame him for his trepidation.
“I promise it’s safe,” I assured him, pleased to have his gaze on me again.
“Oh. Yeah. I mean, I’m sure.” He gestured vaguely at the shuttle’s interior. “I mean, this is just a little ship and it’s incredible.”
