“Made enough noise between you,” someone said, “for the whole island to hear you.”
A few of them laughed in a way that made me gulp. They may not have known that I was a prince, but they looked at me like I was easily attainable prey.
“What’s that behind you there?” the leader said and pointed.
I tried to look and realized that Cighyss’s wings were folded down tight but still created two arched black masses behind him. Lit only by the torches now, the unsuspecting might not have a clue what they were seeing. I certainly hadn’t that first night.
“Time to go,” Cighyss said and wrapped an arm around my chest. He squeezed the breath out of me as he lunged to the sideand climbed out of the water. I heard his wings beat at the air as they jerked us upward.
