I look around at the masses, noting a few students rushing through the doors of the dining hall, whispering in the ears of their friends, so I know it won’t be long now.

“Levi will return in a few seconds. I need you to go with him when he does.”

I need Rebecca to get the fuck out of here so they don’t take her away too—because I know the crazy bitch inside her will end up doing something stupid.

Like punching someone in the face.

“No freaking way.” She shakes her head frantically.

Levi appears from the kitchen, running as fast as he can toward us.

“Rebecca, you’re going. Don’t make me do this shit against your will.”

I made it a point since Felix to never force her into anything. To give her the power over her body she deserves no matter what.

Rebecca’s backing me against a wall, though.

I have no choice.

So when Levi reaches us, I give him the green light with a nod of my head.

He secures his arms around her waist and Rebecca clings on to me for dear life as he tries to pull her away. When I manage to pry her hands off me, Rebecca resorts to swinging her fists, kicking a bunch of tables in the process.

The kids closest to us rush out of their seats, steering clear of the crazy chick and the food she’s spilling onto the floor.

The rest look on with rounded lips and snickers.

But nobody intervenes, not even the staff.

I keep an apologetic eye on Rebecca as Levi drags her halfway across the room, my darkened soul reaching out for her as desperately as she is.

Doing the right thing hurts, which is probably why I never chose to until her.

Rebecca manages to break out of Levi’s hold, sprinting toward me with all her might, but the hurricane taking place in my mind has her appear as if moving painfully slow.

Levi tries to reach her, but there’s no use. It’s too late.

I never knew invisible pain to be this excruciating, but watching Rebecca cry out for me with tears spilling down her cheeks damn near kills me.

I can feel the moment they’re about to burst through the doors, so I drop to my knees with my hands behind my head, and the look of horror on Rebecca’s face says she’s finally absorbed what’s about to happen.

She’s throwing her arms around me just as the doors swing open, a bunch of cops marching inside announcing their presence.

They’re closing in on us as Levi attempts to rip her off me a second time.

“Crayton Shaw,” one of them barks, and I close my eyes when she grabs me tighter.

“You need to let go,” I whisper in her ear, and Rebecca cries into my neck.

“I can’t.”

I’m shoved roughly from behind, knocking Rebecca onto the floor in the process.

Levi helps her up, dragging her away once more, but after a swift kick to his nuts she’s darting toward me again.

I fight to break free and get to her, which results in a power struggle, until Rebecca is back at my side and guns are drawn. I comply only because she throws herself in front of me like a human shield.

“Don’t hurt him! Please!” She bursts out in hysterics as the cuffs behind me click into place. Then one of the cops decides to manhandle her.
