Blood all over my face and hands. There’s blood all over guys.

I rubbed my ear hoping it would make the voices go away. It was a fruitless attempt, but I wanted to focus.

“There’s nothing he can do about it now.” Jasper almost looked spooked as he took a seat at the table. He had gotten into plenty of arguments with Jax over the years, but something like this was apocalyptically bad. Just wait.

“So, what’s her name?” I didn’t need to tell Jasper what Jax could do about it. It isn’t possible to break a mate bond, but he could make Jasper and her suffer in so many ways.

“I have no idea. I got to her within a heartbeat.” I felt the pain in his words. His emotions floating through the distance between us, giving me a peek into his intentions.

“Wow. Cut it close then.” She had been a single heartbeat away from being gone from us forever. It had been easy to say I didn’t want a mate after centuries of nothing, but nothing could have prepared me for the moment I felt the call. My soul reaching out and feeling her beckoning me to claim her forever.

“I couldn’t resist.” That was all he needed to say. I nodded my head in agreement.

Jax walked into the room only a second later. He strode in like he was a king, which meant he clearly didn’t know about the girl lying unconscious just a few doors down. I looked at Jasper with a wicked smile. This was his shithouse to start, and I was going to sit back and watch the show.

“The call,” Jasper started, but Jax silenced him with a wave of his hand. Jasper’s throat squeezed shut under the force of Jax’s power. It was always so annoying when he silenced us like that. A bit of power thrown back could usually break us free rather easily. Rude. He only silenced Jasper for a moment.

“You answered it.”

Well, fuck, he knew. He was too calm to have known. Unless. Unless he had changed his mind.

I lost him. I lost him. I can’t find him.

“Where is she?” Jax said, as if he was barely interested. He couldn’t hide from me. I could feel all his feelings. I hadn’t felt an emotion of my own for decades now, relying mainly on the emotions of those around me to fuel my world. Not until the calling. I felt then, I had wanted her.

Jax was interested in our new pet, and that interested me just as much as her sudden arrival.

“She’s sleeping. Exhausted herself out trying to beat the door down.” I informed Jax, wanting to see his reaction. Curiosity bloomed from him. Jax used his inflection free voice and hard stare to intimidate, but his feelings always sneaked through.

“I have no plans on accepting her as my mate,” Jax announced when the silence stretched on awkwardly.

Jasper looked up from the table, confused anger rolling through him. “What do you mean? You can’t reject a mate that the pack has accepted.”

That part was true. A mate bond accepted by one member of the pack accepted it for all of them. Jasper had already said yes. For all of us.

“I have no plans on being a mate to her. The two of you can do what you want. Like you always do.” Jax glared at us. He always treated us like little brothers, even though we have been full demons for centuries now, and of course we didn’t share any parents.

“You know that won’t work,” Jasper said with a taunting smile. “The bond will pull the two of you closer, until you can’t stand to be apart any longer. They literally created our souls next to each other in the beginning of time.”

The mate thing was pretty serious. They were apparently your perfect match. Every bit of you, everything about you, was perfect for them, and vise-versa. Cosmic perfection. Plus, the bond pulled you together. None of us would have a choice about it.

“We’ll see,” Jax said.

Of course, he would think he was powerful enough to defy the celestials.

“Well, it’s been a fun evening. Let me know when she wakes up and I get to play with her.” I couldn’t stop smiling at the thought of taking her out for a round in my room. I had never found an equal before. Would she scream for mercy and beg me to release her? Or would she fight me until every last inch of her body succumbed to me? I was already getting hard thinking about it.

You just stab the knife upwards like this. Again. Again. Good job son.

I left quickly, anxious to get back to my room. I had preparations to make. I now had a demonling to take care of. First thing to do: research. Figure out how much of our power the humans got when they became a demon. Particularly in healing. There is no way my perfect match wouldn’t be able to heal quickly after the slash of a blade.

I changed course, heading for the records room. I may have books on torture and anatomy in my room, but humans were not something I studied. No one would be around this time of night, anyway. Most had retired to their rooms, drinking and fucking their way through eternity, as usual.

Quickly grabbing the book,Demonlings,I made it back to my room without crossing paths with anyone. I flopped up on my bed and quickly opened the weathered pages. The sweet smell hit me, and I suppressed a groan. I fucking loved books. I opened it up to learn about my new little pet.

Demonlings are the human mates of demons. Once a human with one or multiple demon mates offers their blood in sacrifice, the demon may either accept or deny the mate’s request. **Note: if the demon is part of a pack, the acceptance or denial will apply to all the current and future members of the pack. **

Demonlings will inherit powers of all mates. This includes regeneration, curses, and hereditary powers. In the instances of the pack not being completed, the demonling will exhibit powers of all mates, including those yet to be initiated.
