“I’m Morrigan. A demonling as we established. I am also a vampire, your vampire, as you have said. Now, what is it you do with your vampire offspring?” I wondered if he expected me to fuck him. Or maybe this attraction I was feeling towards him was some weird sire thing, and he wasn’t my mate at all.

“My people are at war. I want to end that war as quickly as possible, so no more lives are lost. For vampires, that is. I want you to kill the king of the fae for me. Then, I will release you back to your demon mates. Until then, you cannot contact them. If demons get involved, too many of my people will die.” He sounded honest, and if so, that wasn’t the worst negotiation I could imagine.

“Why are you so sure that the death of this king will end the war?” If I was going to kill a dude for this guy, I needed to at least know it wasn’t for nothing. I know vampire souls just reincarnate because they are not celestial souls, but still.

“King Ailill killed my mother. Once he is dead, the fae will have to announce a new king, one that I will agree to terms with. I will never have peace with the fae while Ailill lives.”

Well, that was heavy. I wouldn’t want to work with a guy that killed my mom either. But attacking an entire kingdom, because of one death, was extreme.

“Do fae usually use heirs as next in line to the throne?” There was quite a big hole in his plan.

“Yes,” he looked at me suspiciously.

“Well, then whoever ends up the Fae King will feel the same way about you as you do about Ailill. They may make an agreement with you now, but you will always have to watch your back for the day they strike. That’s no way to lead a successful nation.”

My words seemed to sink into him and settled onto his shoulders like a boulder made of lead. He had never even considered that as a possibility.

“Maybe we can convince his son that his father needs to die. Then all will be right.”

I wasn’t entirely sure, but it almost sounded like he was considering taking military advice from a locked-up stranger. I mean, my advice was solid, but he’s not being very careful. Or he was right, and I had no chance of escaping.

“What makes King Ailill so evil and worth killing?” I asked. If he was going to convince this guy’s family to be ok with offing their dad, he needs to be pretty terrible.

“He killed my mother,” Jace growled, his hands balling into fists on his legs.

Sensitive subject, got it. “Yes, I can understand you not wanting him in this life cycle for that. But is there anything else he’s done? Something maybe other people might find really horrible?” I imagined all the terrible things in my mind that a fae king would be capable of.

“Killing my mother is the only crime I have known of him to have done.” Jace said, gazing at the floor.

I got up from my cold itchy nest and head over to the two-way mirror. I stopped inches before it, taking him in. He looked up and caught my gaze, and I felt entirely lost within him. I wanted him to come in here and talk to me, or else let me be out there with him.

Part of my soul ached where the connection to my boys was solidly blocked off by whatever fucking room this was.

“I’m going to need you to tell me about how your mom died then.” He winced slightly.

“I don’t need to tell you anything,” he said with a snarl. “I said willing was an option for you, not me.”

I felt an almost automatic urge to pull on my fire magic, but of course, nothing came to my command.

“Willing will go so much easier on you. I am known for fucking up plans.” I jeered back at him.

“I can teach you how to submit, love. I would have thought being the mate of demons you would have learned that one by now.” His tone bit into me, making me miss my demons even more.

“Fine, try me.” I turned my back on him, snatching my blanket off the floor on my way. I curled up on the mattress and pulled the blanket over my head. Would it kill them to turn down the lights a little bit?

A few minutes later, I heard the click of the door as it was unlocked. I jumped up with vampire speed, using all the power I could to propel myself toward the door. I made it into the holding chamber before something grabbed me around the waist and threw me into the wall. Jace pinned me there with his body. His hands gripping me tightly at the hips.

He looked down at me, his eyes flashing white again. All I could hear was the sound of his blood rushing through his veins and the steady thump of his heart. I felt like I was losing control. Without access to my Hell power, my vampire power felt insufficient.

I lunged at him, digging my teeth into his throat. He wasn’t expecting it and it gave me enough of an edge. Salty and sweet blood touched my lips, and I jumped up, wrapping my legs around his waist. I threw my hands around his neck as I hugged myself to him, taking in as much blood as I could before he forced me off of him.

He rested my weight against the wall, much gentler now. His hands were still on my hips, but his grip loosened, and he ran his hands across my ass to my thighs. I continued to drink. Maybe I could drink him until he passed out from blood loss. I started really pulling on the blood, flooding my mouth until it overflowed.

Lightning fast, he grabbed both of my wrists, pulling them free from their grasp around his neck. A growl emanated from him, and I liked something about the way it felt as my chest vibrated. He pulled my hands up above my head against the wall, effectively ripping me from his neck. He deftly transferred both into the grip of one of his. Bringing his hand up to his mouth, he made a show of licking his finger before he rubbed it over the wound, and it healed up instantly.

“What was that?” I asked.

“Vampire healing, love.” He gave me a smirk, which reminded me of the fact that I was pinned to the wall by this man and my legs were tightly wrapped about his waist.
