“She had worked herself ragged. I finally got her exhausted enough to sleep. We are going to let her sleep,” I grumbled, throwing my coffee cup at Justice’s head. It was my 18thcup of coffee for today, anyway.
He narrowly avoided it as he ducked down quickly. It sailed past him, only to shatter against the wall. Pieces of ceramic cascading down to the floor. It left a brown splatter on the wall to mock me for now. Hell would clean up after my mess as soon as we left.
“She never sleeps this long,” he muttered, looking down at the cup of poison in his hands. He had been drinking a lot of it today, too. Instead of going back to the record hall, he planned on spending the day with Mor. I had told him what she was doing with the birds. He wasn’t happy about it.
“We never let her sleep. Not once. We don’t know how long she would like to sleep in.” My tone was defeated as some of my frustrations now sat in a splatter on the wall. I wanted to rush in there and see her, too. I don’t know how Jax stays away from her for so long without losing his mind. This mate bond is no joke.
The glass of poison shattered, spraying the table with something so potent, corrosive holes formed. Justice stood suddenly.
“Something’s wrong,” he said as he bolted out the door.
I followed him, immediately turning left out of the war room. My heart sank. I knew where we were headed. Justice made it to the door first, finding it locked. Why the fuck was it locked?
He didn’t bother with asking Hell for a key. Lifting a foot, he broke it down in a single kick. Splinters of wood flew around us as the door exploded inwards. He made a much bigger mess with the door than I did with the coffee cup.
Justice rushed in and I followed on his heels, begging her to still be lying in bed. I should have noticed Mor wasn’t screaming at Justice. Pissed that he had destroyed her door without trying to knock, at least. She wasn’t there. I went to look in her closet, but Justice stopped me by putting his hand on my chest.
“She isn’t here. I can’t even locate her mind.” Justice’s words made my blood run cold.
“Jax,” I exclaimed. “She’s probably with Jax at whatever hunting cabin.”
“And neither of them told us?” Justice raised an eyebrow.
“Maybe they gave in to the bond, so they have been too busy to let us know.” It was plausible.
Justice pulled his phone out of one of his many pockets. The number of weapons I have seen him pull out of fucking nowhere during a hunt was ridiculous.
“What?” I heard Jax grumble through the speaker.
“Is Mor with you?” Justice said gravely. He started pacing back and forth, crunching over the shattered remains of the door.
“What? No. She’s supposed to be with you.” I knew there should be a lot more emotions in his tone than what came out. “Hold on, I’ll find her,” Jax grumbled.
I waited anxiously as each passing second dragged on longer than the next, and it felt like time waited for his answer. A feeling of dread washed over me and I could feel the fire inside me begging to be set free.
“She’s not in Hell.” Jax ended the call immediately.
Justice and I looked at each other with mirrored expressions. Those four paltry words shattered my world and broke free the fire inside me that burned hotter than I have ever felt before. Where was my mate?
Justice and I were still standing in the same place when Jax walked in. Apparently, Hell agreed he needed to get his ass here now. Jax ran at me, and I stood with my arms limply to my sides as he rammed me into the nearest wall. My fight wasn’t with him.
“Where is she?” he snarled.
“I don’t…” He pulled me away from the wall and slammed me back into it again, harder this time.
“You were with her last. What did you do to her?” Jax had his fangs on display, which meant he was really fired up.
“I gave her a massage. We had sex. She said she was tired and then she went to bed.” I listed off what I could remember through the fog that had settled over my mind. A constant humming noise had taken root in the back of my head. Like the static after a show turns off.
“Maybe she went back to the human realm? To find Sheila,” Justice supplied. He looked mildly calm, if not contemplative.
Jax relaxed his grip on me. He stood before me, breathing heavily and completely lacking his well-composed control. His posture mirrored every shattered piece of my heart.
“How can you tell if she’s in the same realm as you?” I looked to Jax, pieces of today slowly clicking in the whirling mess that is my brain.
“No matter where she is in Hell, I can reach her through the telekinesis,” Jax breathed out like this was pointless.
“But not if the doorway is closed right,” Justice supplied, still sorting through scenarios.
