“The landlady says it’s quite safe. They’ve got security cameras all over.”
“That’s precisely because it isn’t safe!” I do my best not to shout at her, but still, she tenses. “Cancel it. I’ll go with you.”
She shakes her head. “No! I won’t. I like the place.”
“I won’t allow it. Out of the question.”
Her mouth falls. “I’m not asking for your permission! You can’t stop me!”
“Yes, I can. You’re my responsibility, Britt. What if something happened to you while you live there? What am I going to tell your parents?”
She looks wounded. “Thanks, Andrew. But I’m not your responsibility or even my parents. I’m an adult, in case you forget. I’m twenty-two years old!”
It doesn’t matter. She’s a little girl in my eyes. She says it with defiance on her face. Her chin lifting and her little button nose pointing to the ceiling. Damn. She’s one feisty little girl — tiny yet infuriating. All I want to do at the moment is grab her ponytail and press her against me so I can cover her mouth and make her moan.
But of course, I can’t do it, not here in front of my employees and clients. So I run my fingers through my hair hopelessly. Just wait until we’re alone, I promise myself. I’m going to spank her little ass until she gives in, until she begs for my forgiveness, and until she promises to never leave my side. Unbelievable. What has just happened? “Is it because of last night?” I lower my voice so no one can hear us.
She doesn’t speak for a moment. “Not really. I just don’t think I should keep living in your house for free.”
I want to talk her out of it, but she looks determined. “Fine, what about you paying me rent? Would it make you feel better?”
“Thanks, but… I’m also your employee, and I don’t want to complicate your relationship with your girlfriend.”
I frown. “What the hell are you talking about?”
She glares at me for a moment. “Nothing,” she says and attempts to walk away from me.
“Wait a minute.” I grab her arm. “Something has happened. What is it?”
“I said nothing!” she says, “Let go of me!”
She attracts lots of attention, and I have to release her arm. Fucking hell. I curse silently. This is not the Brittney who made breakfast for me this morning and told me she would be fine with whatever decision I made about us. What game is she playing? Has she come to her senses and regretted our night together? Can the feisty girl be less unreasonable? The worse thing is her disobedience turns me on, and all I want is to tie her up and fuck her senseless. I consider ordering her to go to my office, but we both have a lot of work to do. I take a deep breath. Fine. I’ll take care of her tonight.
Chapter 13
Brittney
With all that has happened from last night to this morning, my thoughts are all over the place and it’s hard for me to concentrate on work at all. So I mostly just greet the guests and answer some emails.
Andrew is in a foul mood. He hasn’t spoken to me since I told him about the apartment. I’m still mad too, but I keep telling myself I shouldn’t be. Andrew is just the way he is, and he’s been with Melissa longer than he’s been with me. I have no regrets about having my first time with him, though. I’m just sad what’s between us has to end so soon.
At precisely three, he leaves the gym, and I let out a sigh of relief. My productivity increases immediately. Within an hour, I cross out half of the items on my to-do list for the day.
“Hey Brittney,” Darrell says to me when I’m taking a break.
“Guess what Mason suggested last night?”
I look up. I’m still wondering what the two of them did afterward, but keep my curiosity to myself. I wait patiently for him to speak.
“He said he was planning to film a music video for the song he wrote for you, and he would ask you to play Brittney.”
“No way!” I say, incredulous. “He couldn’t be serious.”
“He was!” Darrell says, grinning. “He even invited me to be the drummer.”
“Wow, good for you, then.” The opportunity must mean a lot to Darrell. Drumming is not just a habit to him, and he takes it seriously. Even as he’s speaking to me, his hands are tapping on the front desk.
“He’s going to ask you when he comes in today, and you won’t say no, will you?” he asks.
