I held out the cash. “I’ve never seen you before. You’ve never heard of this place.”

“Who are you?” He snatched the money with a grin, and I headed up to the room.

In the main common area, Rico and Sam played what looked like a very lazy game of cards.

“Thought you might’ve gotten lost,” Sam said.

“Never,” I replied.

He nodded at one door. “Missus in there. We’re trading shifts in another hour or so.”

I thanked him and padded over to the door he’d mentioned. I wanted nothing more than to fall into bed next to Paige and sleep the day away.

When I opened the door, she was sitting bolt upright in bed.

CHAPTER 5

PAIGE

Istared at Tom for a moment. With the air conditioner working at full blast and the faint scent of diesel hanging in the air, my mind spun back through time, to a different hotel room on the other side of the city. I’d tried all night to run from him then, and when he finally captured me to the point I couldn’t run anymore, I sat on the bed just like this until he put me on a plane and took me home. I’d regarded him with the worst suspicion and fear.

When he walked in the door now, I flung myself out of bed at him. He caught me with a small grunt. My breath raced. The diesel smell clung to his clothes, and I began pulling them off him before I could think twice.

“Paige?” he said. “What are you?—”

“Help me,” I said.

As always when I said that, Tom listened. He worked the tiny buttons on his shirt while I grappled with his belt. Clothes scattered in every direction, and soon, he was naked before me.

“Do you want to go to bed now?” he asked.

I considered the question as I carted my fingers through his chest hair. When I went to bed, tomorrow would arrive. I might be safe with Tom at my side, but I couldn’t fight back the flow of time. I could only make it take longer.

“Not yet.” I pressed my lips to his neck.

He groaned and leaned in to my touch. My tired body started to come alive at the sound. I’d spent so long in this place, in so many places I could barely remember the names of them all, as a receptacle for other people’s pleasure. A thing for others to use as they wished. Not anymore. I played Tom like a masterwork instrument, coaxing noise out of him. When I played with his nipples, his voice jumped higher. When I palmed his hardening cock, he buried his face in my shoulder. All because I wanted him to. And I wanted to see Cairo through the eyes of a satisfied woman.

I took Tom’s hand and tugged him back toward the bed. He followed easily. Desire curled in my gut just watching him move.

“Make me come.” I sat on the bed.

He licked his lips and dove in. First, he kissed me like a drowning man, pulling desperate gasps from my lips. Then, he reached for the hem of my shirt.

“Not yet.” I grabbed his hand as nerves squeezed my chest. Tom might be naked, but I couldn’t give up this power yet.

He nodded and ducked underneath my shirt instead. I let my eyes flutter closed. The sensation of his long fingers on my ribs, his warm, wet mouth on my nipples was so much more intense now that I couldn’t see him. He teased me higher and higher, the low want between my legs growing into something ravenous.

Like he could feel the switch, he pushed my legs apart and slid his hand into my pants and underwear. I bucked into his touch with a slick sound, and he grinned against my skin. He always liked when he could feel how much I wanted him, and fuck, did I want him. He circled my clit with two fingers.

Memories from those months resurfaced, and I tried to force them away. I wasn’t that person anymore. But they refused to disappear, and I realized my mind was offering these images to me as evidence. I really wasn’t that person anymore. I wasstrong, brave enough to come here, and as Tom reminded me with his hand between my legs, loved. There were still some boxes I didn’t want to open, but I didn’t have to run from every single thought of that time anymore. I was more than that.

I trembled through my first orgasm, soaking my underwear. Tom pulled his head out from under my shirt.

“Now.” I nodded.

He smiled and pulled my shirt over my head as gently as he could, then my pants down over my legs. The cool air from the AC danced over my skin, and Tom stared. I was about to ask him to grab a condom when I realized I had one last demon to face. I took his hand and pulled him over to the full-length mirror. Habit shut my eyes automatically. I’d looked at myself in clothes over the last six months often enough, but never naked.

Tom kissed my shoulder. “I understand.”
