We are all sitting outside on the patio, so Denny can be with us. He lays down at my feet and quickly starts snoring softly.
“I still can’t believe you actually found the perfect guy on a dating app,” Courtney says shaking her head.
“Excuse me,” Michelle interrupts. “She didn’t find anyone. I did. She just lucked out that her sister has such perfect matchmaking skills.”
“If you could find me the perfect guy,” Jess says. “Then I’ll believe you have the skills, until then, let’s call it beginner’s luck.”
I laugh, listening to my new friends joke with one another. For the first time, I feel like I’m in a group that I belong. That I’m not just here because I’m Michelle’s sister who tagged along. It’s nice to feel like I’m finally on the same ride as everyone else.
“Court, did you decide on a new book?” Quinn asks.
Courtney’s face lights up and she reaches down into her bag and pulls out a paperback copy of a book callThe Alpha King.
“No,” Jess groans. “Anything but some alpha-hole douche that some simple-minded woman lets control her.”
“It’s not like that,” Courtney chides.
“I love me an alpha and I’m not simple minded,” Michelle adds.
“The women aren’t controlled. This story is about a power woman who hands over control on her terms,” Courtney continues.
Jess looks unconvinced. “I know what I like and I know I won’t like it.”
“You’ve honestly never read an alpha romance novel?” I ask.
“Nope.” Jess shakes her head.
“Then how do you know you won’t like it?” Courtney asks.
“That’s a good question.” Jess leans back in her seat. “And when my mom asked me the same thing about asparagus, I threw up in her lap.”
Quinn nods to the table. “She really did. It was gross.”
“Well reading one little alpha novel isn’t going to make you puke or your pee smell funny.”
“Gross,” I grumble.
“You can power through.” Quinn adds.
“Fine but when I read and hate this book—which I will—I get to pick the next book we read. Deal?”
“Deal.” Courtney reaches out across the table and they shake on it.
