Epilogue
WILL
Being with a woman whose family attends fundraising functions the way most people attend sports events can get tedious, but never the annual Christmas fundraiser at St. Nicholas Hospital.
After Marie's push, they worked miracles to help Billy survive and thrive. So I want to do all I can to give back.
“Did you see this?” Marie asks, pulling me down the hospital hallway towards the front entrance.
But instead of leading me outside like I’m expecting, she stops in front of a large statue.
“Should I know who this is?” I ask, tilting my head to see if that helps jog my memory.
“It’s Saint Nicholas,” Marie says. “We used some of the leftover funds from last year to pay for it. “I thought he was an important part of our story and where we are now, so I wanted to show you.”
She loops her arm around my waist and pulls me close to her. “I think it was more than luck that you broke into my apartment to steal my necklace.”
“What do you mean?”
She points at the Saint Nicholas statue in front of us. “I think he may have helped.”
“Who? Santa?” I joke.
“No,” Marie chuckles and shakes her head. “Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of thieves.”
I turn and look up at the statue with a renewed interest. The slightly carved upturn in the corner of his mouth almost makes it look like he’s smiling down at us. Like this had been his plan all along—to save Billy and bring Marie into my life. I wonder if he knows about the ring in my pocket and the question I plan on asking later tonight?
“He must have known I came to steal your heart,” I lean close and brush my lips against hers. “But you ended up stealing mine.”
