Traffic is minimal for this time of night in the city, and I get to her building in no time. Manny opens the door when he sees me jump out of the town car. I've been here a thousand times, so I knew he wouldn't try to stop me. I take the elevator up and use my spare key to get into the apartment.

“Alexis?” I call out. I don’t want to scare her, thinking I’m an intruder or something. “It’s me!”

I look around the living room. The only sign that she was here, besides the decorations, is an empty bottle of wine turned on its side, and a wine glass with a sip still left in it.One glass.I don’t know what I’d do if there were two and I found some guy here with her. It wouldn’t be some misguided father figure protection that would have me pounding the piss out of him.

“Nick,” I hear Alexis say my name.

I turn and walk down the hall towards the room she grew up in. There’s a faint light glowing underneath the crack of the door. I’m about to knock when she calls out my name again.

“Nick!”

I rush in, opening the door without knocking. Time seems to slow down and speed up all at once. Alexis is sprawled naked on the bed with her hand between her thighs. I stand there stunned at the vision of beauty and sexuality in front of me. She's too lost in the moment as her orgasm hits to have heard me come in. What little blood left in my brain that hasn't been diverted to my cock tries to send a signal to my feet to turn around and go—but I can't move.

The moans of pleasure coming out of Alexis trigger some dormant animalistic urge inside me. A growl erupts from deep in my chest. And the desire of her naked body calling to me is nearly impossible to hold back. I want to consume her, to make her mine, but a faint voice of reason on my shoulder stops me.

Her eyes snap open at the sound, and our eyes lock for a moment, neither one of us moving or breathing.

I feel like I'm at a crossroads. If I stay here, I will most definitely lose the lifelong friendship that is very important to me. But on the other hand, the object of my deepest fantasies is looking at me right now, like she wants me just as much as I want her.

ALEXIS

Nick is the first to break eye contact and turn away from me. I can't explain the feeling of loss that chills me when he disappears down the hall.

"Wait!" I call after him. I grab my dad's old Yale lacrosse shirt that I've been using as a nightgown from under the pillow and slip it on. It barely comes down to the top of my thighs, but it's enough to cover everything Nick's already got an eyeful of. "Will you stop?"

Nick doesn't stop, but he's not heading for the door as I expected. Instead, he walks over to the bar and pours himself a scotch.

“What the fuck was that back there?” he turns and snaps at me.

“Don’t yell at me! I was alone in my room whenyouburst in.”

“I thought you were calling for me.”

“I was, in so many words,” I mumble under my breath.

“This isn’t funny, Alexis.”

“I’m not laughing, Nick.”

He seems taken aback by the fact that I'm not backing down, so I continue. I'm feeling a gambit of emotions right now, and he is the closest thing to a verbal punching bag I have.

"I'm not one of your employees that you can boss around. I'm a grown-ass woman, despite your inability to see me as anything other than the little girl I used to be."

He scoffs. “You think I don’t know. That I haven’t noticed that you’ve grown up?”

“I don’t know what you think. I haven’t seen you in years.”

He opens his mouth to speak, but nothing comes out. Something flashes in his eyes like there is something he wants to say, but its holding him back. He downs the scotch in his hand.

“I didn’t come here to fight with you.”

“Why did you come?”
