Her eyes meet mine.

"Tell me what you need."

"Besides matcha?"

"You know where it is." I move to the fridge. Find her favorite jar of matcha. "You want one now?"

She shakes her head. "Dinner is good."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah."

"You want to sleep in my bed?" I ask.

"Okay."

"With me?"

"Yeah." Her gaze shifts to her wedding ring. "With clothes."

"I like my way better."

Her smile is bittersweet. "I know."

I try not to read into it.

I hate that she's hurting. I hate inviting distance between us. I hate how much I hate it.

But I'm gonna get the fuck over it.

I'm going to be the husband she needs.

"Not sure I have any food." I check the cabinets. It's mostly frozen burritos and canned soup, but there's enough to throw together dinner. "What do you think about shrimp and broccoli?"

"Mmm. Food?"

I chuckle. "Go. Put your suitcase away. Then come back."

"Away where?"

"In my room."

"It's yours?" she asks.

"Ours."

She looks at me funny. "We, uh…"

I shouldn't press the wholewe're marriedthing, no matter how much I want to. "Until Monday at least."

Her shoulders relax. "Okay. Until Monday." She carts her suitcase into my bedroom. Our bedroom.

I fill the rice cooker, bring a pot of water to boil, add frozen shrimp, then frozen broccoli.

It's not the finest meal in the world, but it's enough.

"Jackson didn't like it when you cooked for me." She wraps her arms around my waist. Her lips brush my neck. Her chest sinks into my back.
