I need to tell him.
I need to tell him about the appointment, that I think it's a good idea, that I'm going.
That I'm still not sure I'm committed to this marriage.
I love him, I do, but I still don't trust him completely. I still don't believe we have the same idea of trying or honesty.
I turn around, stare up into his eyes, try to find the words.
I love you, Griffin, I do. But we need to hash out this whole honesty thing. Because I can't tell you everything I feel, right when I feel it. I need to process sometimes.
I'll try to stop cutting, but I've tried before. And it's not easy. It doesn't happen right away. The more I feel like I have to do it, to make you happy, to be the person you want me to be—
The more I do that, the worse it will be.
The harder it will be.
So, yes, I'll be honest with you. But on my timeline. And I'll try, but that's on my timeline too.
That's why I'm keeping this appointment. Because I don't know if we'll ever be there, if we'll ever see eye to eye about this.
I don't say any of that.
I bring my lips to his chest and whisperI love youinto his skin.
But I don't say anything else.
Chapter Forty-Nine
Juliette
Of course, our friends insist on throwing a party in our honor. We wake up to an invitation to a barbeque at Dean's place. An invitation that is not optional.
Everyone will be there and it will be awesome.
We linger at our apartment all morning. We make tea and fix pancakes and read YA aloud.
Then we grab matcha lattes on the way to the beach, walk along the sand, dart into shops, grab lunch and ice cream and iced drinks.
It's a perfect day, from my last sip of matcha to my long, slow shower with Griff, to his reaction to my dress—my white dress, the rehearsal dinner dress, is the only clean thing I have left.
It's perfect, until I check my phone and see that reminder email.
Appointment at the offices of Agos and Associates at 9 a.m. Monday.
Chapter Fifty
Griffin
The party is packed.
Dean's parents' place is bopping with friends and strangers. People mingle on the couch, pour drinks at the bar outside, dive into the pool.
It's mostly people from Inked Hearts or Blacklist, but I only know half of them.
I guess when you throw a party, you get to pick the guest list.
And this is a hell of a party. I have to hand it to Dean. When he goes for something, he goes for it.
