It's time to face my fate.

To see if this is really happening.

I close my eyes and pray for two pink lines.

Chapter Forty-One

Chase

Ariel shrieks. "Oh my God."

I reach for the handle, but it's still locked.

"Chase… Oh my God." Her fingers hit the door. The handle. The lock.

Click.

I turn the handle, press the door open.

She stares back at me, her eyes wide, her smile wider. "It's…" She turns the test over.

I don't know what to say, so I stick with something simple. "You're welcome."

She laughs as she digs her fingers into my skin. "I… God… what do I do now?"

"How about breakfast?"

She nods into my chest. "Breakfast is good. But I need more. I need big."

"You're not feeling any symptoms?"

She releases me. Looks up at me with a hazy smile. "Just a little… the ginger tea helps with the nausea. I thought it was nerves, but—" She jumps into my arms again. "I… I asked my adviser how she felt about her first pregnancy."

"She knows?"

"No, I told her my brother and his wife are trying."

"Your brother got married?" I tease.

She laughs. "She said she knew she wanted a baby, but when she saw the pregnancy test… all of a sudden, it was real. Terrifying and exhilarating and everything."

"You're terrified?"
