I hit call and lift it to my ear, but as I expected, it just rings.
I knew staying away from her the last few days was a mistake. But after Wednesday night, I just couldn't look her in the eye knowing that I'd betrayed her. Instead, I holed up with Reid in the hope we could come up with some kind of plan that could get me out of all this shit without having to kill anyone, namely his cunt of a father.
I continue pacing, knowing that I need to calm the fuck down if I'm going to get into that car and have to deal with her without strangling her.
After swiping up my duffel from when I dropped it the first time Letty ran, I pull the driver's door open and drop down.
"Kane, I—"
"Don't talk to me. Do not say a fucking word to me right now unless you don't intend on getting out of this car alive."
I watch in the rearview mirror as she swallows nervously.
My eyes hold hers, begging her to defy me, to tell me that she's lying, to give me a reason to wrap my hands around her throat and squeeze the fucking life out of her for doing this to Letty.
My mind flicks back to reading that letter, of her telling me all about our baby.
Fuck.
My fingers tighten around the wheel in a painful grip as I try to imagine just how Letty felt right now.
Feeling myself starting to lose control once more, I rip my eyes from hers and start the car.
My wheels screech on the asphalt as I floor the accelerator.
The inside of the car is silent aside from my heaving breaths and her quiet whimpers in the back, whimpers that ensure the darkness that's trying to seep through my veins hovers right on the edge, threatening to take over.
It's not until we're out of Maddison County that she speaks. Although I have no idea why she asks the question she does, it's fucking obvious.
"Are you taking me to the Creek?"
My teeth grind at the sound of her voice.
"I'm taking you to hell. And if it turns out you're playing me, it's going to be a one-way ticket."
"Not my husband," she begs, forcing me to picture one of Victor's men. A man who, apparently, only has Alana around for show because he never fucks her. I have a few theories as to why, but mostly, I don't give a fuck.
I can't help the laugh that falls from my lips.
"Your husband is too nice." We both know it's a lie. He's one of Victor's most loyal members, and he's anything but fucking nice. "You're going straight to the devil."
A whimper rips from her lips as I assume she pictures Victor.
If that's the case, then she's going to be sorely mistaken, because if my gut feeling is anywhere near right, then that's exactly what he's expecting me to do.
It's obvious the moment she realizes that we're not in fact heading for Victor because she sits up a little, staring out of the window with interest.
"There's no point memorizing the journey in case you need an escape. Something tells me that you'll never be leaving."
"W-where are we?" she breathes as I pull down a dirt road on the outskirts of the Creek.
We are literally in the middle of nowhere. It's the perfect place to deal with scum like her.
"It's a surprise," I say, keeping my voice menacingly low.
I pull to a stop outside of a huge set of gates. If you didn't know that someone lived down here then you would never find them with the way they're cleverly hidden behind the trees and bushes, but when you know, you know.
After a couple of seconds, they begin to open for me, alerting the person inside to his visitors.
