"You've got my cell. You snooping for evidence of jersey chasers?"
"Oh, shit. No. I haven’t opened your messages or anything. I was just Googling."
"Googling what, baby?" he asks, jumping over me and sitting beside me.
"Digging up dirt that you wouldn't tell me."
He glances at the screen and laughs.
"What? I needed a distraction and you'd left so…"
"You thought you'd hack into my cell."
"Pretty much. I can't believe you never changed your passcode," I tell him, closing the browser down and locking it again before passing it over.
"Why would I? Only me and you know it, and I have nothing to hide from you."
"I really didn't go through anything," I say, needing him to believe me.
"I know. Like I said, I have nothing to hide. You can snoop away. And I trust you."
He leans over me, brushing his lips over mine as he reaches for the tray.
"I got a bit of everything I could find. There are pills too." He nods toward the small white bottle.
I stare down at the random mixture of food before me.
"We can get takeout if it's not what you want."
Reaching out, I squeeze his hand. "It's perfect, Luc."
I pop a chip into my mouth, mostly to make him happy because my stomach still churns as the memories of being inside that room with them refuse to leave me.
We sit in silence for a few minutes as we pick at the food before I remember something.
"Do you think your—" My eyes cut to his as I realize my mistake. He might have refused to call him Dad before today but I think he's really done now. "Do you think Brett meant what he said about getting rid of me before?"
He thinks for a moment, scrubbing his free hand over his face and dragging it through his hair.
"I want to say no, but I have a feeling that might have been the most honest thing I've ever heard him say."
My heart sinks into my stomach because as much as I didn't want to believe it when he said it, I do.
"He went after Libby on purpose," I mutter, needing to put the words out into the universe. "Do you think that means there aren't others?"
"I really fucking hope so."
Picking up a carrot stick, I munch on the end as a million and one things fly around my head.
"He couldn't have known that going after Libby would break us apart."
"No, but he clearly thought it was worth a shot. And as usual, I played straight into his hands."
Luca's fingers curl into fists. His knuckles once again split open.
"Stop that, please. I hate that you're hurt."
"I could say the same about you."
