I didn’t have to glance in Rocco’s way to know he was sweating. Andino sat up straighter and stared down at his food, nervously peeking the old man’s way. Still, what was a surprise was Andino’s reaction. That little punk had a worm’s backbone; there was no way he was getting involved. He was afraid of everything unless...It seemed there was more I needed to look into.
The list of people who would die grew by the day, bringing a smile to my face. Both uncles on either side of me scooted away from me.
The meeting went on very much the same. People updated the old man on whatever they ran. I never had to give my intel. I was more there to show face. The only person I reported back to was the old man himself. In private.
When it came to Rocco, his numbers on the brothels and strip clubs the family ran were way off. I knew he wasn’t hitting half of those numbers, but he was using some of the drug money to cushion it so his father wouldn’t look his way. Still, it was too late for that.
By the end of the dinner, I was more than ready to leave. I stood up as everyone left. I barely passed the table before the old man called for me.
“I have a few things I need you to check over. There is more movement than my idiot son,” the old man said.
Why did I have a feeling it would be out of state?
“New Mexico, and while you’re out there, pick up the kid.” He turned away from me as Rocco called out for his father.
Fuck. This was time away from my boys. Still, the faster I resolved it, the quicker I could be back home with them.

DAR
“Howmuch longer is Elio going to be gone?” I asked for what felt like the twentieth time.
“Who knows?” Novak flipped the magazine page he was reading.
“Why did you three stay back?” I asked.
“Not allowed to be there. Not family.” Novak dropped the magazine and glanced my way. “Rules, kid.”
“We’re around the same age,” I ground out.
“Don’t rile him up,” Devyn said.
“Fuck you. I’m going to go find something to do.” I stood up, ready to leave the warehouse. I was becoming antsy, and it had been a while since I’d been out, causing havoc.
“Don’t even think about it,” Ken said.
I laughed. “Or what?”
Calvin came down the stairs, carrying a basket. He glanced our way and shook his head. “You’re going to get in trouble, Dar.”
“Sounds like a good time to me.”
Ken’s full lips were set in a firm line. “You want all of us to die that badly?”
Sayge sat up on the large couch. “What? Would he really kill you guys?”
The look that came over Novak’s face was a solid yes.
“We’ve never seen him obsessed with people before. He attaches to things for a short while, but it’s been beaten into him to get rid of anything that could be taken from him.”
I glanced at the guys. This was the most we’d learned of Elio, and I didn’t want to waste the opportunity.
“What do you mean beaten into him?” I asked.
The guards looked at each other, but it was Ken who sighed. “Exactly what it sounds like. The head of the family raised Elio since he was a kid.”
“What about his parents?” Sayge asked.
