I froze as Killian’s voice echoed down that narrow hallway off the foyer. His words traveled from the direction of his office.
I held my breath as his voice came again, laced with malevolence.
“She’s been throwing herself at me like that will change her fate.” He chuckled, an evil, grating sound. “Shedisgustsme.”
“What about her father?”
My heart began to race. He was talking aboutme. Aboutmyfather.
“Francesco is ending him now.”
My mouth dropped open as pure, unfiltered rage ripped through my body and blurred my senses. Every thought of escape left my mind.
I ran, and not toward the front door.
I burst through the door to his office, my sneakers squealing as I came to an abrupt stop, screaming, “No!” The door bounced off the wall and nearly hit me in the face, but I caught it, panting.
Killian stood, his pistol pointed at my chest. He didn’t lower it as I shut the door behind me and leaned against it, finding it hard to breathe as our eyes met.
CHAPTER 34
KILLIAN
Ilowered my gun.
“How the hell do you keep getting out?” I almost choked on a laugh as fear flashed behind her eyes. I turned to Mikey, who looked just as shocked as she did. “Obviously it wasn’t you leaving her goddamn door open again.”
Mikey pursed his lips, his eyes still on Sera, who pressed herself into the door like she could will herself to disappear right through the wood, her anger morphing into fear when she saw the revolver.
“What are you doing down here, Sera?” I tucked my gun back into its holster. I looked down at her expectantly, watching the fear from having a pistol trained on her chest fade as she sized me, then Mikey, up. “Going for a run?” I motioned toward her brand-new sneakers.
She flushed for a moment, then stuck out her chin and narrowed her eyes into cat-like slits. “Don’t kill my dad.”
I arched my brow as I rounded my desk, crossing my arms over my chest.
“I’m serious. Don’t kill him.”
It was cute that she thought she could come down here and give me orders. Cute, but not acceptable. “I’ll think about it.”
“I’ll do anything,” she cut in with force, but the color staining her cheeks broke through the iron-clad front she wore.
“I’ll, uh, I’ll see you later, boss.” Mikey turned a similar shade of pink as he started toward the door. Sera made no attempt to get out of his way. “Move,” Mikey said with a hint of annoyance.
She eyed him carefully, then turned her gaze back to me.
“Promise me you won’t kill him.”
“I don’t make promises.” I fought back a smile as she held her position against the door, refusing to let Mikey walk past her.
“Thentellme you won’t hurt him.”
“No.”
She swallowed thickly, some of that bravado fading. I started forward, taking her by the arm and yanking her from the door. Mikey glanced in our direction before moving out of sight, and I didn’t so much as breathe until his footsteps went silent and a hush fell over the house.
“You picked the lock, didn’t you?”
“I broke it,” she hissed, trying to yank her arm out of my grasp.
