Everyone knew this. “What else?” he demanded, wanting to know if she’d learned anything else about him.

“Why?”

“Why what?”

“Why have you always been different with me?”

“I haven’t.”

“You have.”

This had to end right now. “Maybe because of the way we met,” he said slowly.

“The story we’ll tell our children, no?” She giggled. But he did not do the same in return. Instead, he stood up. “I have emails to reply to.”

“You’re working? Even now while we’re on vacation?”

“You’reon vacation.” He slipped a hand in his pocket while the other one curled around his whiskey glass. “The wedding starts at two in the afternoon, so you have the morning free.”

“Did I say something?” she asked, looking perplexed.

“I have work to do. I always have work to do.”

“And the work will never end. Stay a while, Dominic. Isn’t this nice?”

“It is. I wish I could, but I can’t.” He gave her a rueful smile as he left.
