“I know who you are.” He moved his paperwork away and placed it on the seat beside him.

She wanted the job.

“Yes?” He wasn’t going to make it easy for her. She had to tell him she wanted it.

“I was calling about the ... job. You said you had something.” She didn’t sound anything like the haughty woman he’d spoken to earlier.

“The job?” He wanted to enjoy this.

“You said I could ... you said ... you said if I needed to work I should call you.”

“What made you change your mind?”

“I’ve had time to think about it.”

“And?”

“I think I might be interested in working for you … your company, if you … have a job for me.”

“Hmmmm.” He let that dangle in the air for a few silent moments. “There are things you can do to help me.”

His phone buzzed and when he glanced at it and saw Galatis’ name, his gut turned hard. “I have to go. I need to take this. How about you call me tomorrow? Maybe we can do an interview on the phone and take it from there?”

He hung up, and just as he answered the call from Galatis it occurred to him that he really hadn’t thought this through. Eleni was a waitress and she worked on an island that was a few hours away from Athens. She’d need to get to the port and then take a ferry. It wasn’t an easy daily commute. He’d have to put her up somewhere.

He really hadn’t thought this through properly at all.
