“He was a married man, with a family,” he heard her say. “I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how to ask my mother.”

He placed the bin near her. “Do you want to get some fresh air?”

“No-I … this is a shock.” She seemed so frail and so broken. “I feel like I’ve been hit by a yacht, and there is nothing left of me.”

He cupped her face, his insides emptying. “Don’t say that. I want to take care of you, I … I don’t want you to face this alone.” She didn’t hear him, or perhaps his words were more white noise in the sea of her misery.

He was going to stay by her side no matter what she had to say about it. “Your mother has the answer, but …” He stroked the back of her head, worried, because he’d never seen her like this before.

Not even Ioannis had been able to make her feel so low. “Do you want to know, the truth?”

Because if she didn’t, there was no need for it. He would have to make his decision blind.

“I don’t want anything from Galatis. I don’t want him in my life, but I want to know the truth. It’s time my mother told me who my father is.”
