Dominic’s gaze sharpened to a knife edge. “What’s your point, Linus?”

“My point is you hired her when there was no need.”

“I say there was a need.”

“Based on—”

“My gut. It seems you have a problem. Do you?”

“Nikolaos always kept me informed. These decisions were always—”

“I’m not Nikolaos.” Dominic didn’t like the way Linus seemed to think he knew best. Maybe he did, to a degree, but he was not in charge. Dominic was.

Dominic still hadn’t forgotten how flustered Linus had been when Dominic first arrived in the Athens office and announced that he would be in charge during Nikolaos’ absence.

With his boss away for so long, Linus was always trying to gain favor, always looking to cast himself in a favorable light, as if he were angling for a promotion so that he could somehow slide into Nikolaos’ place, if and when the opportunity ever arose.

“Of course, you are not Nikolaos.” Linus bared his teeth into the smile Dominic hated.

“And you would do well to remember that.”
