“I would never ask such a thing of her. Can you imagine the court case and the headlines?”

“Is that what you always worry about? Money and your reputation?” She didn’t like the way he had casually dismissed Miranda’s feelings.

“I’m being serious,Dom.”

There it was again. The little muscle ticked along his jawline. He started to type something on his keyboard.

She understood.

He had dismissed her, not that she wanted to spend a moment longer here. Spinning on her heels, she marched towards the door.

“Noted,” he said.

She paused, releasing a breath as she turned around.

“I’ll try to be better next time.” He was still typing away, staring at his computer screen, as if he couldn’t bring himself to look at her.

“Good.” At least he had taken her advice. Dominic Steele was going to listen to her and become a better human being. She couldn’t help but smile as she got ready to leave.

“It’s just that ...” He sounded nervous. This was new.

“What?”

“I knew, even before you confirmed it,” he said, dragging his gaze to her.

She closed her eyes for a few seconds longer than usual, hating that she’d drunkenly told on her friend, even though he’d already known Miranda had a crush on him.

“I know she’d walk on coals for me. It makes me uncomfortable.”

“Is that why you’re rude to her?”

“I don’t aim to be. More that I keep my interactions with her short and to the point.”

“A ‘please’ and a ‘thank you’ wouldn’t go amiss.”

“Noted.”

She turned to leave, again.

“Also, I need you to come with me again. Tomorrow. Linus has called in sick, so—”

“I’ll do, you mean?”

“Pardon me?”

“You said last time that ‘I’d do’ like I was cement filler or something.”

A smile tugged at his lips. “I can assure you that you’re nothing like cement filler.”

“That’s good to know.”

“We’re going to The Odeon of Herodes Atticus.”

“So much Greek culture and heritage to take in. It can’t be easy for you.”

“I don’t hate going to these places, if I were on a sightseeing trip or something. You understand that, don’t you?”

“Does it matter what I think?”
