CHAPTERTWENTY-ONE

DOMINIC

Dominic ignored Miranda’s questioning expression when he returned from his meeting alone.

But it was the sight of Linus, standing around, talking to her, that really pressed his anger buttons.

“Don’t you have work to do?” he growled at Linus, unable to stop himself. It was wrong of him to be speaking to a manager in that tone, and especially not in front of another employee but Galatis had wasted his time, yet again, and Dominic was pissed. Again.

Linus looked fearful. “I was waiting for you. We have a meeting, and you are late.”

Shit. Another meeting.Dominic blew out a weary breath, then raised five fingers at the man, indicating that he needed a few moments. He entered his office and let out a groan. His day was falling apart. The room sloped as the shock hit—most days were like this. He had nothing to tell his father.

Lately, his life seemed to be a clusterfuck of meetings that served no purpose and wasted his time.

He’d called Galatis this morning, while the doctor tended to Eleni, and asked to reschedule the meeting they had planned, but the old man had insisted he was fine to meet and it didn’t matter if Dominic was running late.

Dominic was running late. The detour to his house and tending to Eleni and summoning his private doctor had cost him time. Not that he would have done things differently. But he’d later rushed to the Erechtheion, another ancient Greek temple, to see the old man, but Galatis barely gave him ten minutes of his time.

After taking a short but slow walk around the temple dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon—a fact which he knew only because Galatis had thrown it at him—the old man had suggested they meet again because he was busy. He had something he needed to deal with.

“That’s why I called to reschedule, Hector,” Dominic had said, through gritted teeth.

The old man had tapped him on the shoulder. “We meet again. I get my secretary to arrange another meeting.”

Another Greek site. Another useless meeting. Another hour or more wasted. And to make matters worse, he’d mentioned that his nephew was getting married. It was his sister’s son, and Hector invited Dominic to come. It was only when he casually mentioned that the wedding was in Santorini, that Dominic’s ears pricked up. Some of the shock and surprise at this news must have traveled up from Dominic’s gut to his face. Galatis hadn’t even finished gloating about the beautiful young socialite his nephew was marrying, when something hardened in Dominic’s belly.

Because, in a day of clusterfucks, why wouldn’t this man’s nephew be marrying Demi Laskaris, the woman Dominic had once dated briefly?

Dominic said nothing to Galatis, but smiled, and steered the conversation to their PAs talking and setting up the next meeting. He’d had enough of the man stringing him along for a ride that went nowhere, playing games, and dragging this out unnecessarily.

He’d already been worked up before the meeting knowing that Alexander had spoken to Galatis behind Dominic’s back; a dirty move made by his scheming brother—a move his father had probably suggested. His family didn’t trust him to see this through. By the time he’d left the so-called meeting, he was even more irritated.

He picked up the phone and called his brother again, but it went to voicemail, again. He didn’t leave a message.

This entire week had been a clusterfuck of epic proportions, and to top it all, this morning there had been the episode with Eleni.

It wasn’t her fault she’d fallen, but Jesus, he could have done without that drama.

He toyed with the idea of calling her to see if she was okay, but Linus knocked and came in carrying a thick file. “You said five minutes. It has been five minutes.” Linus looked apprehensive.

“I’m sorry I snapped at you,” Dominic said, in a rare moment of making an apology.

“You did not look happy. How was our friend Hector?”

“He was fine.”

“Did he make a decision?”

“Not yet.”

“You took the new girl again?”

“Eleni, yes.”

“She didn’t return with you?”

“Are you watching her every move?” It pissed him off that this guy was so concerned about his business.
