She kicks off her boots and shimmies out of her shorts. “Don’t take too long.”

I’m frozen at the sight of her in just her tank top and underwear. But I turn on my heel and head to check on Sam, shutting the door behind me.

Sam’s pacing the length of the living room.

“You good, dude? Is something wrong with Jess?” I look around, slightly panicked for a second.

“What? No, she’s perfect. I’m fine. Did Carter take Abby home?” His words come out in a rush.

“Uh, yeah. Abby asked him to, and he said that’s why you guys drove together, just in case she needed a ride home.”

“Right. Okay. Are you good? I have to go.” Sam’s hands are balled into fists at his sides, and he looks like he’s ready to bolt.

What the hell is happening?

“You know if something is wrong, you can talk to me, right?” I tell him.

“I’m fine, or I will be. I’ll text you,” he says and walks out the door.

I stare at the closed door for several seconds, confused, before I walk over and lock it as he pulls out of my driveway.

Shaking my head, I walk to the fridge, grab a couple of water bottles for Luna tonight, and rush back to be with my girl.

After I peek into Jess’s room and see that she’s sleeping peacefully, I open my bedroom door and turn to close it.

“Hey, baby, I got you a water.”

I don’t hear anything, and when I turn back around, Luna is starfished in the middle of my bed, passed out. I fight back a laugh as I set the water bottles on her side of the bed. I brush my teeth before shedding my clothes and climbing into bed with her.

Like always, she rolls over and curls up into my side. I softly kiss her forehead, letting my lips rest there for a second. “I love you,” I admit to both of us in the quiet of the room.

She hums a sound of contentment in her sleep and burrows deeper into my side.

While it isn’t the way I thought my night would end less than ten minutes ago, I can’t help but smile because of how amazing my life is as I fall asleep.

Isitonthecouch and bring my legs up, wrapping my arms around them as I rest my forehead on my knees.

I’ve been a mess all week leading up to today.

The day that Special Agent Hunt and his team will be here to talk to me about The Family. Sam is on his way to get Jess, while the rest of the gang will be over to support me. Noah asked if I wanted them here, and I admitted I wanted to only tell the story once.

Plus, I don’t know if Noah will get mad when he hears everything. I’m afraid he’s going to judge me after hearing everything.

“Luna, are you okay?” Jess asks me softly.

She knows what’s happening but hasn’t asked to stay to talk to them. I wish I could go back to the blissful feeling I had on girls’ night last weekend.

I turn my head to look at her and rest my cheek on my knee. “Yeah, I’ll be fine. I’m just nervous. The FBI is only here for a few days, and I would rather not do this more than once if I can avoid it.”

“Would you like me to stay?” she asks.

“No, if there’s something I don’t remember, Noah will write it down, and we’ll ask you later. Is there anything you want to tell me before they come? Over the last couple of years that you can remember, has anything changed drastically?”

She takes a minute to think before shaking her head. “No, I don’t think anything comes to mind.”
