Chapter 46
Cole
My God. Did she just say what I think she said?
She comes down the stairs from the stage and runs into my arms. I embrace her and hold on tight. People are patting me on the back and telling me congratulations. She looks up and catches my eye. “Sweetness, I wasn’t—” I start.
“Kiss me.”
Well, shit. Who am I to deny this woman anything?
I kiss her. Slowly, softly, thoroughly. Her body melts into mine.
Stop the kiss, Cole.
This is a semi-formal event.
I stop the kiss with a groan. She opens her eyes slowly. “Hi,” she says.
“Hi,” I return, smiling.
Lexie steps back. I look to the table and see that all the ladies are crying, and my dad is smiling big. She moves in to hug Kat and Remi.
Jesus. What a mess. You need to tell her the truth.
I see my momma smiling big. Babs and Mavis dabbing at their tears. I look at her, squealing with Kat and Remi.
What’s so wrong with being engaged to Lexie? It’s not like you haven’t thought about it before.
It’s too soon. She’s not ready. Hell, you’re not ready.
I’ll tell her.
Later.
