“We’re watching a movie,” Sadie says. “Want to join us?”

“No, I think I will turn in.” Tenley sighs.

“Did you have a good time with Spence,” Sadie asks.

“Spence is an idiot,” Tenley says.

“Oh no, what happened?” Sadie turns on the couch to look at her.

“He said he’s going to marry me.” Tenley has a sour look on her face.

“Whoa,” Sadie says.

“Right?!” Tenley exclaims.

“What’d you say?”

“I told him he was an idiot,” Tenley says.

“Yeah, I don’t blame you,” Sadie says.

“Okay, well, goodnight,” Tenley says.

“Night,” Sadie calls.

“Night,” I parrot, looking back and forth between the girls not quite believing what I’m hearing. Then turn to Sadie. “That was an odd conversation.”

“I know, why would he say something like that?”

“I meant what you and Tenley each said.”

“What’s wrong with what we said?”

“What’s wrong with Spence saying that?”

“It’s weird.”

“Why?”

“Well, for one they just met. And two, you talk about that stuff ahead of time, and you plan it. You know when the guy will propose, it’s not a surprise. And it’s certainly not one person telling the other it’s going to happen. Plus, Tenley doesn’t believe in marriage.”

“Sadie, I’m going to marry you,” I tell her in all seriousness.

She smiles. “You’re cute. I love you.” Her voice is light, almost teasing.

“Do you not believe me?” I ask.

“Of course I do,” she says rolling her eyes.

“Sadie, I’m serious.”

“Okay.” She pats my thigh. It feels condescending.

“You’re going to have my babies.”

“Yep.” She giggles.

“Sadie, what part of this are you doubting?”
