“Look, I am right in the middle of something,” I tell them both. “Melissa, I’m happy to give Ethan a message for you. Aaron, I really wish you’d called first.”
“Why?” Aaron asks. “Are you together with him now?”
“You and Ethan are together?” Melissa looks me up and down slowly. “Huh,” she says as though shocked.
Bitch!
My phone rings, I look down and see it’s my mom.
Shit!
I hold my finger up to Aaron and Melissa and answer the phone, “Mama, can I call you right back, I’m kind of—”
“Sadie Ann, your father was trying to fix it himself and instead of it saying no signal, now it’s many squiqqly lines across the screen. He’s very upset.”
“Okay, Mama, hang on one second—”
“If you don’t have time, I can find someone else,” my mom says.
“Do you have someone else who can help?” I ask her.
“No,” she says.
Fuck my life.
“If you don’t mind, I will wait inside,” Melissa says trying to push her way in once more.
“Actually, I do mind,” I tell her.
“Sadie, what do you mind?” my mom asks.
“Mama, hang on, just one second,” I tell her.
“If she’s going in, I’d like to come in too. I’d rather talk to you in a more comfortable setting than here on the front porch anyway,” Aaron says.
“Who are you?” Melissa asks Aaron.
“He’s my—”
Shit. Do I have to go in to the whole story? Can I just say friend? If I say ex-fiancé is she going to want to know what happened? Is Aaron going to cause a scene?
“I’m her fiancé,” Aaron says.
That’s not good.
“Oh, thank god,” Melissa says. “That makes more sense, that the two ofyouare engaged.”
“We—” I start.
“Well, it looks like you’ve got it all figured out now, Grace,” Ethan appears out of nowhere walking up the drive. He’s covered in sweat, his t-shirt sticking to his body outlining every nook and cranny of his six-pack abs. The muscles in his thighs pulse with each step, he’s breathing hard, his hair slick and awry. I don’t think he has ever looked sexier.
“Congrats on your engagement,” he scowls at me as he pushes past us all, walks in the house, and slams the door.
