“Dude, you take the longest showers in the world,” Sam says, barely looking up from his phone.
“Turn your phone off. This is a technology-free weekend.”
“Says the guy who hasn’t unplugged the router yet.” He looks up and cocks his head. “I think you left the water on.”
“No,” I sigh. “That’s Mags.”
“Ha. You wish.” He chuckles. When I don’t join in, he looks up to meet my eyes. “Really?”
I nod.
“Mags? The Mags?”
I nod again. Standing to pull on boxers and a T-shirt.
“The fuck is she doing here?”
“I would imagine she works for the Seattle office,” I say drily, throwing on some jeans, Converse, and adding a light hoodie, so I’m presentable.
“How did we not know that?” he asks, tapping his finger to the tip of his nose.
“Fuck if I know.” I shrug in response, finger combing my hair into place. It doesn’t matter how I style it, the longer front pieces just fall back into my face anyway. “But it’s definitely her.”
“Mags Mags?”
“Yes, Sam.”
He rubs the back of his head. “Well, I guess it makes sense we wouldn’t know if she’s on the West Coast. We’ve never really interacted with this division before now. I mean, you should have known since you’re the boss. But me? I had no reason to know. I have an excuse. You? Not so much.”
“She said she hates me.” I ignore his ramblings.
“Ouch. To your face?”
I nod. “And then I said, ‘hey, we should catch up’ like a lame ass.”
Sam laughs. Once again only looking up at me when I don’t join in. He raises a brow in question. I nod in response.
“Not your finest comeback, Dev.”
“No.”
“What’re you gonna do?”
A knock on the door interrupts our musings. Nancy pokes in her head. “You said to get you once everyone has checked in?”
“Yeah, thanks, Nance. Can you let everyone know I’d like to meet in the main room in fifteen minutes?”
“Sure thing.” She glances at Sam, her face flushing, before stepping back into the hall and closing the door behind her.
I look at him, brows raised.
“I know, I know,” he says, raising his hands in a surrender pose. “But right now, we’re talking about you.”
“I’d rather talk about you.”
“Don’t you have a meeting to lead or some sort of big boss-like thing to do?”
I glance at my wrist even though I’m not wearing a watch per my own instructions for the weekend. “We’ve got time.”
