“Which was a huge mistake,” I continue like he didn’t say anything. “Then you didn’t even follow through with ending it in a timely—”
He puts a hand over my mouth to silence me. I hate it when he does this.
“One,” he starts. “I can’t stand when your voice enters those high pitches that make you sound like an over-eager baby orangutan.”
Oh, he did not just call me an orangutan! My eyes widen, and my nostrils flare.
“Ooff afrgent.” I want to tell him what an arrogant asshole he is, but he interrupts me again.
“Shh,” he says. “I’m not moving my hand until I say what I need to. I’d hate for you to hyperventilate. Or worse, suffocate.”
His thumb and forefinger inch toward my nostrils and his crooked one-dimple smile takes over his face.
Blanche:I think he’s enjoying this a little too much.
I suppose he could suffocate me fairly quickly.
Blanche:If he does, he’s never getting out of this Podunk prison cell.
I know he would never hurt me.
Blanche:Who hasn’t wanted to kill someone they love at least once?
Not that he loves me.
Blanche:Does he?
I concentrate on slowing my breathing and ponder these new thoughts.
“Two,” he continues. “The papers I received didn’t require action or a signature. You filed a one-party annulment and claimed I tricked you into getting married. You sent pictures and the scavenger hunt list. So, if anyone failed to do something, it was you.”
He lifts his hand and bops the tip of my nose with his index finger. “Sorry, Charlie.”
And faster than you can sayWyatt Reed, I’m pissed at him again. “You’re such—”
He places his finger against my lips. “Shh. I need some quiet. And I can’t have that if you keep harping.”
My eyes narrow.
I don’t harp.
“And if I have to keep listening to your voice, I’ll do everything in my power to ensure you never get that annulment.”
My gasp echoes through the little room. He wouldn’t dare!
But I can see it in his eyes. He would.
He would totally dare.
So, I stay quiet even if the thought is intriguing, forced to stay married to him.
Then it would be out of my hands. I could enjoy it while it lasted.
Blanche:And die when it’s over and he leaves us.
“Let’s sit down and stay calm until we know what’s going on. We haven’t even seen what Nelson is looking at. He could be full of shit,” Wyatt says.
I nod because he’s right. He guides me to sit with my back against the wall and then joins me. The concrete is cold against my back and bottom, and I shiver slightly.
